Interesting take on a magical academy RH plot. Claire is a blind, orphan witch. She's not completely blind, she sees shadows and her other senses make up for her blindness. In my mind I was imagining Claire had some of Daredevil's abilities.
The way Desmond, Malcolm and Everett treated Claire was very sweet and all their interactions with her were meaningful. Claire is very likeable, she's blind but she's brave and eager to learn everything she can. Claire had a bad childhood but she didn't wallow in self pity. I found her very charming.
There was one or two chapters where it would have been good to know who's POV it was but that was a minor thing. The writing pace was good, I didn't find a dull moment in the story. The author had a lot of work creating a story about a blind girl navigating a magical academy, going through her classes and getting to know the 3 guys - but the author pulls it all off convincingly. Well done !
Fantastic. I was captivated with this story, couldn't put it down. Claire is an interesting character, a little too nice at times, sees the good in everyone. Her guys are very intriguing. I can't wait to know them all better.
This is the first book in a series. The story comes to a natural break, but it definitely leaves you wanting more.
Claire is a low level witch, who still lives in the orphanage she was raised in, despite long being past the age of majority. She can do a few basic spells but hasn’t really had much training, because of being declared a low level witch. As she’s also blind, there is nowhere else for her to go. She has a quiet life, mainly gardening, which she loves, and reading, using a spell to read books out loud to her. She doesn’t have any friends and has always been bullied. Then one day she is called into the Mother’s office and she is told that she is to attend the Realm’s Academy where the best and the brightest witches and shifters got to learn how to be the best examples of their races.
As soon as Desmond, Everett and Malcom meet Claire, they know she is not only their Fourth, but also their respect Soul Flame and Mates. It is unheard of a Triad all being mated to their Fourth, but they know it’s true. Not wanting to scare away their ‘Little Witch’ they decide to keep their distance as she settles in to her very new and challenging life.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s not the most original of plots, or the best execution but I really liked the characters. I particularly liked that Claire makes friends before she becomes too attached to her Triad. Her friends are there for her all the way from the beginning. They are supportive and protective and provide invaluable guidance. It is through these friends that we learn about the much larger world that Claire finds herself in after leaving her very small and isolated home town.
The world building is interesting but there are big gaps, which I believe will be explained further in the series as there are references to the world outside the Academy and visiting her friends’ homes. I understand the author wanting to spend this first book examining the characters to draw the reader in, but I would have preferred a little more information about the world in which they lived.
On the whole, this was an engaging and enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series when it’s published.
Some inconsistencies and a few typos but otherwise a well written and engaging first novel. The storyline is interesting and the slow burn RH reasonable. I love the gentle female lead and all her triad. There is limited bullying and no sex scenes, both of which are a bonus for me and meant I didn’t skim any of the book. I’m really looking forward to the next in the series.
