I never quite knew how this book was going to end and I loved that. The characters are complex and rich with detail. The story is heartfelt and will make you laugh and cry. I felt the story is realistic in that the events that occurred were painful at times but led to a happier ending than it would have been without the trials.
I listened to the audible version and loved the voice actors. They brought so much life to the story.
Penelope Ward had created something special with this book which has so much heart. It was impossible not to adore Carys and Deacon’s story!
Carys and Deacon are neighbours who develop an unexpected, touching and complicated friendship. Deacon loves the single life and has no plans to settle down anytime soon while Carys is a gorgeous single mother with a baby daughter, Sunny. She’s elegant, beautiful, graceful and fascinating, and she’s been through a lot. Their friendship is comfortable and easy, and it makes her feel less alone. Their friendship would be a lot less complicated if they weren’t so attracted to each other and they didn’t have so much in common. The more time spent together, the more their attraction grows. Deacon tries to keep his distance but there is a special bond there, something which goes beyond the attraction, beyond how much they have in common, and beyond both having their share of broken dreams...
I’m going to be honest and admit it took my probably a third of the way for me to start enjoying this book. I can’t really pinpoint why I felt this way but thankfully I persevered because this book ended up being everything and more than I could have wanted. Deacon and Carys are neighbors and after their first official meeting I was honestly cringing in embarrassment for what Carys was saying to Deacon. Then I laughed and laughed and laughed. Boy was it so good!!! Their other neighbor was hilarious as well - if only apartment blocks were really like this. But hands down it was Sunny who made this book a standout. I adored every time she was part of the scene, but it was her love for the Bee Gees that made me adore her just that little bit more. It was beyond gorgeous. Once again Penelope has shown me why I have to read each and every one of her books. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
Where to start. Firstly, the characters could not have been written more perfectly. Yes, they were annoying, belligerent, crafty, and made no promises. But they were also so funny, so caring, so larger than life. So perfect together. My heart melted for sunny and the way Deacon was with her. Commitment phobic men with babies just pushes all my buttons. Add in the hot mamma, and its the recipe for an unforgettable love story. I wasn't sure what I was getting when I started this story, but it surpassed every single expectation and blew my mind. Their journey was often rough, but so honestly hard fought for. It was so honour to read. I was cheering for them to overcome the tears, fears and uncertainties. And they did it beautifully. A highly anticipated story and one so worth the wait. 5 sunny stars.
This one was different to what I was expecting. It reached me on a personal level, I won’t expand on that but it was done in a nice way that left me happy with the inclusion of such a character. Sunny is definitely my favourite, she makes the story. Life is about the journey, not the destination... so true.
