This boxset is brilliant and really draws you into the series. The worlds the author creates are spectacular, very believable and the behaviour of the characters is convincng. I loved it all, despite always failing to guess what would happen next! It truly is a (inter)stellar read as you discover new worlds in the adventure that is Noa Sato's life. Carl Sagan's Hunt for Intelligent Life in the Universe is esp. good. I could read about Hsissh for a very long time. Hsissh is a wonderful being and a special favourite of mine. I really can't recommend this enough. Every lover of galactic intrigue and adventure, fascinating beings and strong, realistic characters needs to read this.
A very intriguing take on alien intelligence, the Archangel series really pulled me into the futuristic, yet backwards world of Ludeccea. With some easily relatable characters - and some I fathomable, and fast-paced action, it was hard to put down.
I did manage to finish the first book in this bundle, but it felt like it took me a lifetime.
Curiously, two of the three central characters in the book are described as being impaired at perceiving or expressing emotion -- but it feels like author is too, so the reader's experience is flat and abstract as well. Big events happen, sort of -- to people you don't care about, related in a away that strips all the drama from the tale.
This is not a matter of an author losing a wrestling match with the language -- the writing is competent. But reading this, I felt like an ant crawling across a huge, flat, grey parking lot -- I read/crawled and read/crawled, but I never got anywhere. Didn't connect with any of the characters, not even a little. Didn't connect with the story line -- and that took doing, since the bad guys are, on paper, everything I hate in our current events.
I got this bundle at a BookBub-level bargain, and I still feel cheated. But my skinny "Authors To Avoid" collection has a new member. Ugh, and I need a palate cleanser!
I was referred to this series by one of my favorite authors... well, so much for that! It's what I call a "scanner". Sci Fi that grabs me has me reading every word... otherwise I just scan through it and in this case I was actually looking forward to getting to the end... I will, however, give her credit for making a statement the resonated with me - "Love is just a lie men tell themselves. The only true emotions are greed and fear. Love is greed, the desire for sex and fear of being alone and death – you make babies and convince yourself that’s immortality. It’s an illusion." - Being a man, I can relate, but it goes much deeper than that quote and is much more complex than the quote makes it sound... but still, it made me slow down and read it twice!
