I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had a complicated storyline and well developed characters. After her father's funeral, Alex found out that everything she believed about herself and her life was a lie. Now that her father was gone, she was the last of her family line. This put her in a bad situation as someone needed her to do something, but it would cause chaos if she did. They were willing to go to any length to have things their way.
Alex is the troubled teen dealing with the loss of her father. She has been the "mother" figure for her younger sister Lora and is extremely independent for her age. This leads to her showing her stubborn side as the story progresses as she is used to relying on herself to solve problems.
Kael is the dark and brooding guy that has an agenda and knows a lot more than he lets on which adds to the tense atmosphere that is often felt through the book.
I love that romance is on the back burner and that the author has taken the time to slowly introduce the lore. There were a fair few plot twists and turns that I didn't see coming and overall, I was kept on the edge of my seat wondering how Alex was going to survive everything that was thrown at her.
I actually can't wait to get my hands on book 2!
