I was pleasantly surprised by these novels. There were moments, especially in the first couple of novels that gave me the familiarity of The Martian ie the sandstorms and the ingenuity to survive. As the books went along characters and situations changed, with the one common thread being Gizmo. An adorable robot who has his own very special personality, but oh so super handy. He was definitely my favourite character. I can say that I was so pleased every time that he was rebuilt and rebooted during the series I was happy, with a twinge of sadness in between times.
Overall there are plenty of ‘bad guys’ for the colonists to battle with. The first being Earth itself, then greedy corporations. The whole storyline just flows with the right amount of action and science fiction. With two main protagonists, who are both female, both from Earth, who become Martians over time and fight the best fight for their new home planet.
I can’t believe this series is only 99 cents I would recommend anyone even vaguely interested in purchasing these novels to buy them. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I’m so glad that a tv series is in development because I think it will make a great translation to tv.
This book is a collection of the first five books in the series Colony Mars, plus a short story, about establishing a human presence on Mars. Each story pits humans against one another for the future of the first human colony on Mars. I found all of these stories entertaining and believable. I gave the collection 4 stars.
The 'hard core' sci fi elements of the story (the buildings, the life support systems, the transport processes, weaponsetc) are deftly done with sufficient scientific 'detail' to be 'convincing' without becoming mind numbing. I really liked the story arc through the series from a focus on just surviving initially to dealing with the economic and social complexities of the expanding colony. The character development is pretty minimal but there is consistency in the main charaters. Overall a satisfying read.
I only made it through the first two before I'd spent enough time on Mars but they are great books. It seemed like things would continue in a similar vein and I think this is a great series for anyone into sci fi. I would definitely recommend it.
I gave it 5 stars but it was a 10! This box set would make a great T.V. Series.I didn’t even look at another book while reading it( I normally read at least one other book ), now to decide which book to read from my e book bundle ).
