I have been a fan of Matthew for some time now and I am still thoroughly enjoying re-reading his Bernicia Chronicles. Wolf of Wessex is not part of that particular series and in this new novel, Mathew takes us on a different journey where we meet and gain insight into the growing bond between the main characters. In many ways one founded on their survival. I love the way Matthew can paint pictures with words and I just wanted this story to continue. The sign of a great storyteller I guess. Keep his readers wanting more, and yes I want more.
Without doubt, one of the best historical fiction books I have ever read. The author has created a deeply compelling story populated by great, detailed main characters. The quality of the descriptive writing is second to none. Combining intrigue, rugged fight scenes, beautiful descriptions of 9th century England and masterful storytelling, I recommend this book highly and look forward to further in the series.
"There are OLD warriors and BOLD warriors, but there is only ONE old, bold warrior". This SHOULD have been a dark ages saying Dunstan The Bold, long retired, aging, and solitary stumbles on a corpse and a mystery. I cannot say much more without spoilers, but Matthew Harfy brings Dark Ages Wessex to life once more. Not to be missed.
