One of the things I like about the Ark Royal setting is the different aliens CN has created. They aren't humans in dress-up but each are unique biologically, psychologically and morally. The Virus as a lifeform is particularly disturbing. How do you defeat a virus? you can't negotiate it's defeat it or become consumed. Virus space's economy is strange, normal economic concerns such as efficiency and expense don't seem to apply. This gives the Virus forces the seeming ability to throw ships and missiles in to the fray without concern. This entry has fleet actions, fighter clashes and boarding operations. One of CN's strengths as a writer is to give us characters that are believable, both heroic and flawed. Prolonged combat stress takes many forms and substance dependence can be one result. With a name like Right Of The Line it will come as no surprise that some well known characters get fitting endings. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next entries. With Tadpole and Foxes forces arriving at the front the next couple of books promises to have some major engagements.
This book starts out a little slow but carries forward at an increasing pace till the very end. The alien menace is graphically real and very convincing. Nuttall's writing brings characters to life and the battle descriptions have his usual chaotic flair. All in all a good addition to the series.
Nice book. Follows the formulae of earlier books but a few twists that make it more interesting and less repetition. Overall really enjoyed the read so if you like this author (or not!) Either way - give this one a go!
