I liked it. Humanity is out among the stars and are playing catchup in a system that is rigged by guilds, corporations and by the very rules of the "system". Political manoeuvring, training, dungion runs and space pirates. The end fight was epic and shows that even outclassed there is several ways to win. John is still quite self-centred, not answering messages, not telling companions where he is or where he's going. It's also good that he's started to realise that his shortcuts and cheats have in ways crippled him. I liked the training sequences as it highlites strengths and weaknesses of the characters. I much prefer this series to the others Tao has on the go. Look forwards to the next.
I enjoyed the new galactic angle of this new story arc in what is one of my favourites in the genre. The first half is a little slow with lots of detail no doubt providing context for later storytelling. The MC is at his random best, stirring the pot at a whole other level leading to one of the most epic fights in the series. The question-marks raised over his development path mirror my own opinions so I’m interested to see if he will bite the bullet, cult a proper party and specialise...While maybe not quite at the heights of most of the rest of the series, this is a well written, and at least in the second half, an exciting addition. I look forward to seeing where the MC’s adventures take him next.
John, Mikito and Embassy group from Earth arrive at Irvina on the planet Prax to become part of the Galactic Council. Politics leaps into the fore of everything, to choosing a Guild to join, to where you are able to rent/purchase property. John once again becomes involved with the lower classes and the struggle to raise Earth’s abilities and Classers to deal with it being a Dungeon World. A good book, but it lays much of the basis for the upcoming arc of the series. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses and I’m sure how John will come into contact with the Erethran Honor Guard and Royal Family.
This is an awesome beginning to the new arc in the System Apocalypse saga. I really enjoyed reading this and following the MC’s as they learn how to navigate the difficulties associated with not only an alien culture but the politics that go along with this. Really well done and I am definitely looking forward to the next book!
I have fallen in and out of love with the system apocalypse series as John’s character has progressed through the system. The action is consistently great but at the same time it’s a shame so many of the central characters in the previous books no longer feature as heavily. I feel that a few new central characters could and should be tied in to this new galactic saga of John’s. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the series and look forward to the next instalment.
