If you’ve read lj Shen sinners of saints series also known as the HotHoles. Daria is the daughter to Jaimie and Melody who’s forbidden love story starts in defy.
Pretty reckless is high school rivals, with a side of enemies to lovers, wrapped in heart wrenching angst. From the moment I started this book I knew this was going to be a five star read, it consumed me and made it so impossible for me to stop reading.
This story I loved so much, we see daria as the girl who has everything at her finger tips but hides her broken, bleeding and dark parts. Penn sees through all the Queen B facade and he sees all that she is hiding underneath, her flaws and all.
These two people are from complete opposite sides of the tracks. Penn coming from the wrong side of town and known as the tin man and Daria as the rich mean girl.
I absolutely loved Daria, she is the girl with a huge chip on her shoulder and can be down right vicious. I love that she is completely unapologetic, but through seeing glimpses of being in her head, we see glimpses of her vulnerability and what causes her to lash out.
You may think you know what pretty reckless is going to be about, you don’t. Daria and Penn are so complex, I never expected the twists and turns that came out of no where. This isn’t just the love story of Daria and Penn but it’s about her family as well. This family is broken, but in the darkest of times families need to stick together. We see the steps that this family takes to mend what’s happened.
Pretty reckless is full of tons of back and fourth, drama, drama, drama, mountain of feels, twists and turns and so much chemistry.
It’s not only all that above but it’s filled with such a emotional, that you feel like your on a roller coaster with the highs and lows, it’s filled with hate but lust, sexual tension to the extreme, filled with secrets, lies, betrayal, revenge and so much more.
I guarantee when you start this book, you will devour it and love it just as much as I did.
My heart, my heart, MY HEART!!! Oh my Marx...this book is just... I am lost for words, I am blown away. Ms Shen has written us a masterpiece. With every book she writes, I fall even more in love with her words, with her characters, with her stories. This book is raw, it's real, it's EVERYTHING. I seriously can not get enough! I didn't see some of those twists coming, I could not put this book down for even a second! I cried no less than 4 times reading this book!
Pretty Reckless is now one of my top reads...EVER!! My heart was ripped to shreds from the angst, the heartache, the relationship between a mother and a daughter.. MY HEART HURT! So much emotion was written into this book that I just felt every single little bit of it and it was emotionally perfect in every single way.
I felt so much heartache for Daria, for the things she went through, for everything that has happened to her. I can understand why she did the things she did. She is such a beautiful girl. I wanted to fight for Daria! I wanted to put everyone in their place. I had so much heartache for Mel and Daria as well, I just wanted to hug them both so much!
I loved Penn. He is beautifully broken and lost and I just loved his character. He is exceptional, he really is, and when you read this story you will see why. The things he does for the people he loves is just amazing. His beauty shines through. He is one of my favourite guys written by Ms Shen.
I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone. It is a mature YA/NA romance and I can not wait to read it again and again.
I don't give too many 5 stars reviews, I'm a harsh reviewer, so for Shen's PRETTY RECKLESS she more than deserved this 5 star. It is EXCEPTIONAL! Shein has written many more books in the same vein as this one (at which she is a master at) and yet she still manages to find fresh and dynamic ways to describe and narrate to make this book outstanding. If you've read DEFY then you will recognize that Daria is the eldest daughter of Jaime and Melody, a book I LOVED, by the way, I wish I knew this tidbit before starting this story of Daria and Penn because I would have re-read DEFY. This story is just as intense as Shen's other books in this series but I love the superb character development, and in my opinion, not many authors are talented enough to pull off the HATE TO LOVE dynamic. This book is well WORTH the read.
Where do I start? This book just took my breath away. Right from the very beginning my attention was solely focused on the, once again, brilliance of Leigh's words. her ability to captivate and hold her audience's attention is rated second to none (well in my eyes anyway). PRETTY RECKLESS was yet another angst ridden story that will have you completely addicted.
Welcome to the second generation of the Sinners of Saint. They are the privileged, young adults who believe they are entitled to everything that comes their way ... no questions asked ... especially Daria Followhill. I really thought that I would dislike her, but in all honesty, I just couldn't. There was something really sad about her, beneath her exterior facade. She was a character of many layers, to find the real Daria the layers needed to be peeled away slowly.
Penn Scully, betrayed by Daria years earlier, has returned and is seeking some vengeance against the woman who broke his heart and played him for a fool. Penn sees beneath Daria's facade, he sees the sadness that she tries to hide. he literally turns Daria's world inside out, by seeing and treating her as no one ever had. The vengeful boy and the broken girl ... two people who shouldn't click ... but they do.
PRETTY RECKLESS was a rollercoaster ride that will test every one of your emotions. It was heart wrenching, but it was also full of hope and love. One of LJ Shen's best. Also one of my best reads for 2019.
I adore L.J. Shen... and ‘Pretty Reckless’ is one of my favourite books of her to date... an enemies to lovers romance, drama and angst filled the pages, characters that I grew to like more as the story developed.
Rich high school senior Daria seriously puts the mean in mean girls. Hero Penn Scully is a poor boy/athlete from the wrong side of the tracks. Daria commits some mean girl sabotage with terrible consequences that make an unwitting accomplice of Penn involving his twin sister and he blames Daria for the serious fallout – hence his hatred of her. Under terrible circumstances, Penn later winds up homeless. Ironically, Daria’s mother (she is the daughter of Jaime and Melody from the novella Defy (a student/teacher romance) invites Penn to live with their family, which puts the mutual bullies under the same roof without Daria’s mother knowing the history between them. Sparks fly in more ways than one...
‘There's a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she's about to shell out some serious tears.’
Daria and Penn’s story is a tale of gigantic proportions that will leave you breathless while it is tearing your heart out and then resuscitating it. LJ Shen has set a very high bar for the rest of the Totholes in this series with the Queen B’s tale! I cannot wait for the others and their stories.
One of my favourite reads of 2019!! Another 5 stars plus for me Leigh has become my unicorn author and every time the writes turns to gold and I buy and devour all her books! So consumed by this book it was everything and more! Daria snd Penn will make you laugh, cry, destroy you and then put you back back together! Their chemistry and character development through the book was so raw ! The new generation of the Hotholes kids is epic and Leigh makes these characters seem so real I wanna live in their world and become their besties!!
Can’t wait for Knight, Luna snd Vaughan stories next!
LJ shen is the queen of everything! Penn and Daria were just wow I was anticipating this book and it did not dissapoint. For the love of MARX! Women just what a godess you are. LJ Shen's words just cut you deep and make you bleed until you fix yourself up with another hothole. Her men never dissapoint and her woman are always strong.
Everything had me wide eyed and open mouthed. I was captivated from start to finish everything about this book from the drama to the love kept it going for me. I was hooked from page one, each character had a purpose and had me intrigued.
Penn was a a-hole with charm, witt and that bad boy vibe , Daria was poplular, strong and independent. Even though this book hit some lows of bully it's good to see it brought to life . Something as common as bullying needs highlighted because it proves no matter where you come from it can take you by storm.
The sexy scenes were just the right amount of hot without being to over the top for high schoolers. The twists were great and kept me turing the pages, LJ Shen never disspoints with her hot holes and of course adding Penn into the mix was perfection.
I loved having some of the Sinners of Saints characters come back for cameos because thats were my love for LJ Shen and her words began. I cant wait to see where the other stories lead and what becomes if them.
Penn 100% hotness with a splash of badness making your toes curl.
I didn’t think LJ Shen could get much better but this book proves me wrong. There is soo much depth and emotion in Pretty Reckless you will not be disappointed, whether you’re new to her or an old fan. In Pretty Reckless we get to see behind Daria’s Queen Bee facade. Her insecurities and jealousies, love and hatred, for those in her immediate family and in her friendships. We see her struggle to make the choices she wants to make because of these insecurities. The only person that she feels she can be entirely herself with is Penn and of course that only gives her a broken heart. Penn is an angry kid, dealt a really crappy hand in life and only just getting by. This escalates when he has his first conversation with Daria, where they both put something horrible into motion. Fast forward 4yrs and Penn is now living with Daria and wants to make her life just as miserable as his has been, only to realise she already is. Penn slowly helps Daria to see the good things about herself but in his efforts to stay loyal to his family he ends up breaking her heart and his own as well.
I loved how LJ also gave us snippets of Jamie and Melodies view points, it helped a lot in coming to terms with how they all see each other. One of my favourite scenes is near the end when Daria and Melody finally make up.
Pretty Reckless was everything I was expecting from this author - an enemies to lovers romance, drama and angst filled the pages, characters that I grew to like more as the story developed.
Daria has always been my least favourite of the Sinners of Saint offspring, but she definitely grew on me. She's filled with so many different emotions - anger, bitterness, jealousy and sadness, much of this fuelled by her loneliness. Her first reflex when challenged or hurt is to crush the emotions of whoever is hurting her, damage them before they can see the damage that has been done to Daria. Penn and Daria really straddle that fine line between love and hate.
After reading this I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series, especially Luna. I cannot wait for her book!!!
I wish I had the words....but I don't!!! I have read a lot of good books recently, but this is definitely in a league of it's own. The FMC is phenomenal. Yes she is ruthless, damaged and hulky, but my Marx she is strong. I fell in love with her, and can see why Penn did too. Penn...where do you start. He is beautifully messed up. I love the respect he had for her father, and the loyalty he had for those who treated him the same way. I couldn't even fault him when he tried to stay true to his sister, even though she didn't deserve it. But she is family. Brilliant writing, highly recommend
