This story took me from the top to the pits of feelings. The wooing that Kenan has coming from thr start had me swooning, my god can that man with his old soul and maturity seduce you. I wanted a Kenan for me. And Lotus made me so proud from the get go, she's confident and unapologetic about her heritage and the beliefs that have carried her through her healing and finding her beauty and peace after the having her innocent stolen and abandoned by her mother so young. The underlying sadness that Kennedy Ryan always has her stories carry coupled with the smooth flow of her writing made this story relatable and moving and I felt the fear when Lotus fought to keep Kenan to her. They are the cutest couple and seeing them navigate the treacherous waters of parenting along with a difficult ex-wife showed alot of growth and realism as it unraveled. I loved it sooooo much, this book along with the rest in the rest will forever be recommend over and over.
As I was reading HOOK SHOT the words going through my head included sigh-worthy, swoony, a delicious slow-burn, sexy, sultry, sumptuous, steamy and electric. OK, I went overboard with the ‘S’ words but they fit!
I loved Lotus DuPree. I loved Kenan Ross. I loved Lotus and Kenan together.
Let’s talk about Lotus first. She is such a strong and capable woman. She’s heading for emotionally turbulent times and Ryan does an excellent job in portraying her vulnerability and confusion as she works her way through issues that stem from childhood. I really liked that even during times of uncertainty she was an open and clear communicator. She was never coy or timid in her interactions with people, especially Kenan. She handles herself well, making her one of the strongest romance book heroines that I have read.
Kenan really piqued my interest when he appeared in the previous Hoops books. I do enjoy reading books about heroes who’ve been previously betrayed by a woman. I wonder how they’ll react when they show an interest in another woman that’s beyond the physical. Kenan is a basketball player yet his on-court confidence is not mirrored in his personal life; he’s been betrayed by his now ex-wife and the daughter they share is struggling to find her equilibrium as a result of all the upheaval. Kenan is definitely attracted to Lotus, and he wants to spend time with her but he is not offering anything beyond a short term arrangement.
And then there’s Lotus and Kenan together. They are so good! Their chemistry is certainly combustible but what I enjoyed even more is the time they spent getting to know one another. They talked, they communicated, and they did not play games. They spent time together but did not cling. They appreciated each other and they supported each other. These are relationship goals!
I am a bit of a latecomer to Kennedy Ryan’s Hoops series. I’ve heard only good things but somehow placed them on my ‘one of these days’ pile. Perhaps it’s no so foolish a decision because I got to indulge in these books one after the other without having to wait for a new release. I highly recommend the Hoops series but for me, HOOK SHOT stands slightly above the others. I absolutely loved this book!
I don't read many sports romances but this was one brilliant! The characters were fantastic. Lotus is a fun, vibrant woman who is spontaneous. But more than that, she is a strong, independent survivor. Kenan is a compassionate, respectful man who is a devoted father. I love how he puts his daughter's needs first. He is patient and caring and fiercely protective of those he loves. Both characters have been hurt in the past but embark on a friendship. I loved how easy and fun the interactions were between Lotus and Kenan. I laughed so many times while reading the banter between the two of them. *Me: Send me the deets and I'll see what I can do. Unknown: I also hate the word "deets" and all that text talk abbreviations. Me: I'm sry. IDK. It's NBD. I'll BRB with more deets l8tr. Unknown: Real mature. Me: Such a grumpy old man!*
The two of them together made me aww and swoon. But the path to love is never easy especially when there is a spiteful ex in the background and unresolved pain. There are some fantastic characters in this story besides our main protagonists. JP is fabulous and although he is hilarious he can be surprisingly wise too. And then there is Billie and Yari. Best friends that say it like it is and who are there for each other. They give each other a hard time but that's because they know what each of them is worth.
Kennedy Ryan explored some sensitive issues and this wasn't just a love story. It was a woman's journey that focuses on her coming to terms with her past and finding a way to grow. To be free and realise that she has that power within herself. Lotus finds a way to allow people in and they earn her trust. I laughed and cried and laughed and cried some more. This was a beautiful story with strong women, compassionate men and a love that was stronger than anything.
Kennedy Ryan has the most beautiful, soulful stories. I feel them deeply, no matter what she writes there’s purpose in her story. Lotus and Kenan have been crossing paths for 3 yrs and they can feel a connection between each other, but have never been able to pursue each other. Kenan is trying to move on from a failed marriage and trying to get his daughter and ex to see that it won’t be happening again. Lotus has worked out she needs to deal with her childhood trauma before she can achieve intimacy within a relationship. Now that they are currently living in the same city they agree to take things very slowly to see where it goes. Kenan is a very gentle soul whose power and respect come from choosing the gentle option instead of anger. While he doesn’t always understand what Lotus is doing, especially when it comes to his daughter, he respects her decisions and takes the time to think about them. Lotus is a very strong woman who had to grow up quickly. When she went to live with her great Grandmother she learnt the power of faith and voodoo, it’s in those actions of listening to what can’t be seen, that truly brings the soul of this book to life. I would love to see more of Lotus and Kenan.
What can I say about this book that will give it justice? Nothing! Because this book is beyond amazing. Anything This author creates with her mind is incredible. Her books are breaktaking, emotional, and completely out of this world amazing. Hook Shot is no exception. This book took me in a ride and it was beautiful. The story is a slow burn, but you don’t notice that because of all the tension between the characters.
Kenan is an older than Lotus, but the thing is, I never really noticed their age difference at all. Kenan is a sweet man, wronged by his ex and being the best father he can be to his daughter. He is perfect book boyfriend material. He is just amazing and patient. Lotus has pain in her past. She is so strong, and has a connection to the world like no one else. Her character is sassy, funny, and fits Kenan perfectly.
This book had me laughing and it also made me cry. Ms Ryan has a way of doing that to me with every single one of her books. Make sure you have tissues handy. And do not get me started on Bridget...I just can not deal! I can’t wait to read more by this author, I am already hanging out for her next tale!
This was the first read for me of any of this series by Kennedy Ryan, but not the only novel of hers that I've read. It was tough going in places even though the storyline kept me interested mostly. I felt that the characters were 'real' not perfect just humans with both gifts and foibles alike. I'd have liked more information about what it is that they actually do to their hair that makes it smell like burning and why they do it and maybe for Lo's birth gifts/Mimi to have been explored more. Overall it's a great story.
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve been waiting for Lotus and Kenan’s story since the start of this series and it didn’t disappoint. I loved Lotus. She’s so strong and even in print, has a presence about her. I loved the voodoo stuff. Kenan is awesome, a strong introvert that i loved reading about.
There are sensitive issues discussed here so if you’re sensitive please be aware, but a great read!
