A strong but not particularly likeable main character
9 July 2019
This novel was based on a real person’s experiences and was carefully researched to ensure the background facts were true to life. As a historical account, it was very interesting, but I have only given it three stars because I found Jessica May, the heroine of the novel, to be antipathetic and not a person with whom I would care to spend much time. Natasha Lester has created tough but sympathetic characters- eg the heroine of her earlier novel A Kiss from Mr Fitzgerald- but Jessica was not one of them, coming across as someone who sacrificed everything and everyone for her career. Perhaps that is how her real-life model lived, but arguably this is not particularly admirable. Still, that is only my opinion. I also found the ending disappointing.
