Lovely, well-written storyline which makes you think about family structures in Regency England. Matthew and Adelaide both had abusive fathers who ruled their families with an iron rod. Matthew’s father ruled by manipulation and trickery whereas Abigail’s father ruled by fear. When Matthew steps in to help Abigail out of an undesirable situation, he has to tread warily and allow Abigail time to trust him. How he does this and how Abigail comes into her own, makes for a wonderful story which kept my interest from start to finish. Bree has another winner on her hand with this book.
Mathew and Adelaide, both dominated by their fathers, find themselves in a fake relationship to save Adelaide from marriage to a old man as a gambling debt. I really enjoyed this novel as the fearful Adelaide and equally insecure Mathew get the better of their fathers without destroying themselves and, with the help of their friends, find love. This is my personal and honest review.
