A cartoonish and awful family, a terrible city (those place names! Ouch!), and Our Hero's job detract from a great protagonist, a nice future love interest, and Ms Chase's skill at humor, plotting, and character. Better than much of what else is published but nowhere near Ms Chase's usual level of skill when it comes to world building...
It seems the author has hit her stride with this series, most notably in terms of the characters. They're better defined, especially Eden's family and things just flow in this book. An imaginative idea serves as the basis for the mystery Eden must solve - quite clever! The possibilities hinted at in Book 1 are on display in Book 2 and it looks like the series has found its footing.
This is only the second book in this series so far, but I'm finding really enjoy it. This isn't your typical magical cozy mystery. There's a fresh take on creatures. The mystery is also interesting, the characters quirky and fun, and enough chemistry to satisfy the romantic.
Eden and her crazy family are full of antics in book two. No shred of evidence goes unnoticed (more cheese humor) as Eden investigates some odd wishes. I think something is off with the Chief but we'll have to wait for the next book to know.
