Interesting story and well written, possibly much of this story had been embargoed for many years as I can't recall hearing much, if anything, about it over the last twenty or so years. Spoiler alert: it's amazing how in these complex human interactions the whole thing can come undone by a different human interaction and someone's greed and revenge but I guess that's the nature of the game. Surprising that the USA Intelligence system while saving many millions of dollars in research were still prepared to "nickel and dime" (I think the Americans say) a hard working and very brave man taking incredible risks.
The author certainly knows how to keep the suspense constant! This one is hard to close the Kindle down for the night. A real eye opener on what actually goes on behind the scenes and the amount of time and training that has to be invested by those who carry our such dangerous work.
In some ways, this had a text-booky feel to it but still some interesting observations and plainly the research was broad and the author accessed many research avenues. It wasn't a breathless spy story but a measured, if occasionally sidetracked, account of an amazing, secret and dangerous era in our history.
Excellently researched with bibliography, Very well written, reads like an exciting adventure story but every fact is true. Ben McIntyres control of the English language is excellent. Could hardly put it down until finished. Ben Goldberg Rose Bay Sydney
