Since the title had "Harvest" in it, I was expecting a cookbook with vegetable and fruit centered dishes, which was what I wanted since I'm getting so much great produce at a the local farm.
Much to my surprise, I found that most recipes call for bacon, large amounts of cheese, heavy cream and a lot of rich ingredients that I don't typically eat. There is a vegetarian section but most of those still are dairy-heavy.
I ended up returning the book because it just wasn't what I wanted--just putting this out there so that if others have the same misconception as I, it will save you the time for ordering and returning.
I'm not completely disappointed by this cookbook, but I'm not super thrilled either. I ordered it because of Thieghan Gerard's Instagram page which contains TONS of great recipes, and so I just assumed that the cookbook would be just as awesome, but it's very average and a little disappointing. I should have just stuck to the recipes on her Instagram page.
The recipes are delicious and most of them really are easy. But there are ingredients that are very hard to find including types of cheese myself and the grocery store managers I talked to haven’t heard of. And spices and fresh herbs that are hard to find. I am having to google substitutions for ingredients to make them work. You’ll have better luck if you live in a larger city with specialty food stores.
This is a gorgeous cookbook to look at but so far NONE of the recipes have been good. The buttery croissant strata was the most disgusting thing I have ever made. I made the lemon pull apart bread this morning and was a huge mess. I'm an advanced cook and baker. The directions leave everything undercooked. I will not use this cookbook again. I give it 3 stars just for the fact that it's lovely to look at.
Pros - The book is beautiful, great pictures throughout. The recipes are good from what I was able to try. Cons - I would not call the recipes "super simple" as many require over two dozen ingredients. They are also not very healthy as many call for sticks of butter, whole milk, whipping cream, bacon, etc.
This is not a health book, so I will be cautious in saying that if you have gluten sensitivity or wheat sensitivities, this book is not for you. In all fairness, I ordered through the mobile app and it said it was #1 cookbook in natural foods, so I thought there would be a lot more clean recipes or at least recipes that did not require as much dough, bread, flour, pasta, etc. . . If l had no health concerns in my family, I would probably be thrilled, but I just did not receive what I expected—which was a cookbook with more natural ingredients. That said, it is a BEAUTIFUL COOKBOOK and I do believe that if I could make more than half of the recipes, I would keep it, but I am sending it back. It really is not what I expected. Otherwise, I do love her blog and I do admire how beautiful the book looks.
The pictures are great. None of the recipes are challenging, so I might recommend this book for beginning home cooks. However, many recipes were disappointing. I'm talking very, very flavorless. There are only four recipes from this book that I have bookmarked for reuse, and I modify them significantly to make them more flavorful. The only dessert recipe from the book that I use consistently is a vanilla sheet cake recipe that could easily be found on the internet - again, I have to completely modify the frosting recipe to make it edible. Overall, let down by the book.
Very cute book with tons of beautiful pictures... but the recipes are kind of odd and not very practical. I didn't find very many that were "super simple" or even normal American cuisine. If you're looking to use this book as decor for your kitchen, it's perfect! If you're looking for a useable cookbook, I'd recommend looking somewhere else.
