The combination of the historical and paranormal genres can either lead to unwieldy, wordy stories or something totally engrossing and this book was definitely the latter. The story telling had the perfect amount of detail to really draw me in, I wish the book was longer as I just wanted to keep reading it. The description of the magic used in this world was fascinating, it was pretty unique, I loved that there was a snobbery aspect regarding the different types of magic. The characters were all nuanced including the secondary ones. John and Soren although appearing to originally be very disparate characters really connected on a deeper level and it was clear why they were so well suited. The plot had me on the edge of my seat and although little clues were dropped along the way to tantalise us I didn’t see the conclusion coming at all. The pace of the story was perfect. An awesome read that was great from start to finish, highly recommended.
