As an ex-Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Sailor I found the interweaving of historical fact and the artistic components of the story fascinating. The book provides not only entertainment but also gives an insight of the inner workings and hidden mechanisms of the Royal Navy (RN). Insights that are pertinent to the RAN, RNZN, RCN and many other navies. An exciting read.
I have now read the set. All volumes showed the stupidity of somw pf the top brass but what astouned me most was the stat of life in the UK during and after the depression. These are some of the best books I have read which depict true life as it was including the dark years when at Dartmouth.
The narrative was well written with plenty of colour. The author has obviously a lot of detailed naval knowledge of the period, and has skillfully put it to paper to make it a page turner. James A. Perry
Good story line. Seemed technically and historically accurate. Written in well. Unfortunate biase against Germans - would have been improved if acknowledgment of the men's bravery and patriotism of both sides.
