"Carrots and Jaffas" is a beautifully-told story that brings the complexity of "the stolen generation" home with minimal pathos yet maximum force.
Two red-headed twins are growing up in suburban Melbourne, Australia, in a multi-lingual household, inseparable and much loved, when one boy is kidnapped by a misguided young man seeking to make amends for past wrongdoing. The stolen twin finds himself in the bush, where he is brought up on a wholesome diet of stories from his new "grandparents", while his twin brother, mother and father are left behind to endure far greater suffering as collateral damage.
A wealth of knowledge of Aboriginal and white Australian folklore brightens every chapter, along with the odd humorous medical interjection. Doctor Goldenberg's prose is concise and poetic, and the handful of paragraphs describing the twins' simple reunion tug at the heart-strings wonderfully.
Loved this book. If a book provides a great story as well as interesting facts that educate me I feel very satisfied and this book really delivered on all fronts. Wonderful insight in to Aboriginal culture, twin issues and medical info as well. Highly recommended.
