In desperate need of editing but the characters are engaging

I hate unexpected cliffhangers. It’s a sly way of forcing readers to pick up the next book in the series. Good books don’t need incentives, readers should want to continue with the series without such tricks.
I are a have mixed feelings about the book. The author commits all the usual crimes; info dumping, unnecessary detail, frequent reiteration, malapropism, pedantic dialogue and basic spelling mistake. Normally such things completely turn me off a story but for some reason I still invested in the characters.
I can’t figure out what it is about Lucie but I found myself really intrigued by her. Her characterisation is a mess. She’s a survivor of long term abuse and exhibits many of the standard markers of such. However, her recovery is uneven and doesn’t really fit with how recently she escaped.
I will be reading the next book when it’s released and hopefully the story will justify the effort.
