So the first time I was lucky enough to read Power Of Lies, I was hooked from the very first page. And as usual, Auryn did not disappoint! I love that no matter the series or genre, or level of heat/smut; we *know* there will be a fantastic plot, amazing world building, relatable characters and themes; and of course a big book! This book is HOTTER than Auryn's other books, is a bit darker in places, has sweetness and explores the difference between sex and love. Jade is a wonderfully confident and kickass character, the men are complex, intense, sweet and easy to fall for.
This is already going to be one of my top series for 2019, and in my overall top series of all time - up there with ROTI and TDM. Can’t wait for Book 2. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I definitely recommend this book!!!!
Wow! This book blew me away! I was spellbound from the very start - one of those books that sucks you in and keeps you reading to the early hours of the morning because you literally can't put it down. Not that I expect anything less from this amazing author, but this was quite different from her usual subject matter, and yet she absolutely nailed it! I haven't come across anything even remotely like this. I'm actually struggling to write this review without giving away spoilers because it is one of those books where the secrets are revealed over the course of the story, so I'll try and keep this generic enough, yet hopefully convey just how amazing a read it was!
The worldbuilding is just brilliant. Both the description of the world around them, plus how it all comes together with magic, non-magics, the politics, and the different social tiers in the towns/cities, is so well written and incredibly detailed without the story ever getting dry or boring. It is rich with culture - everything has been well thought out and I found absolutely nothing lacking. Part of the reason I was so hooked was because of how easily I fell into the world and felt like I was there.
The characters - now this is where the complexity sets in. No-one is what they seem at first, yet half of them don't realise that until their true nature is revealed as the story progresses. This makes for a wonderful reader experience as we experience their awakening as they do. The story is told from the perspective of our female MC Jadea - I can't help but love her! She is strong, confident and kickass. She knows what she likes and makes no apologies for it, even when she knows other don't accept her for it. I'm not going to go into any detail on the other MCs as I think they should be discovered by the reader as the book progresses. Needless to say they are amazing in their own right, and perfect counterparts for Jade.
However, as the blurb states, this book won't be for everyone. There are some violent scenes, but the predominant theme of this book is the lust/sex magic required to refuel the mage who is rebuilding the city - therefore there are a lot of different sexual situations throughout, some more graphically described than others, and some that readers might find uncomfortable. These scenes can be skipped if needed, and the next book will not have such an intense focus on this aspect, so hopefully this won't deter too many people, but I feel the warning needs to be stated.
I definitely recommend this, but if the theme isn't for you then I highly recommend any other of Auryn Hadley's works as well (I'm yet to find one I don't love).
This book is unlike anything ive read before. It has excellent relatiobship building, and the sex scenes were frequent but not tiring. Its about a lust mage, a prostitutw and a pair of catalysts as they learn to trust each other.
I absolutely loved this book, and have learned i simply cannot be let down by Hadley and her amazing writing skills.
I honestly didn't think I would enjoy this book all that much, as the story and setting aren't my usual preference...but I should know by now not to doubt Auryn's expertise at character and world building. The characters have depth and the world they live in is amazingly detailed. The story is simply beautiful and wrung more than one tear from me. Give it a shot, you won't regret it.
