Very slow to start
22 December 2018
To date, I have loved everything I read from this author. This book however, missed the mark a little.
Firstly, it was very slow to start. It really didn't pick up until the last 1/3 of the book, and was a bit stilted and awkward until then.
Secondly, I found Kyler/Tom hard to figure out. I found myself wondering whether he was messing with Finley with his comments about dating, or whether he really was that naive - I couldn't get inside his head enough to know his proper tone of voice.
Finally, The over abundance of 80s movie and song reference started to drag very quickly. While I knew some of them, a lot of them were lost on me and that then meant their impact was lost on me as well.
There were definitely funny bits, and once it got moving the banter between Finley and Kyler/Tom was quick, smooth and witty. I still found that due to the late pace pick up, I didn't get the engagement with the characters that I usually do with a Laureb Blakely novel. Yes they were funny and good together, but I didn't feel invested.
Still a great read, but not my favourite from this author. I'll still definitely read her other works, and will chalk this up to trying something different.
