I have come to expect wonderful books from Kate Canterbary but she always seems to surprise me with each new release, and BEFORE GIRL is no exception. It was such a satisfying read.
I loved Cal and Stella. Their story was sexy, sweet, intense and funny. I appreciated that they were slightly older characters - Cal’s 42, Stella is 35. I enjoyed that their story was somewhat of a role reversal from typical romances; both are successful in their careers yet it’s Stella who baulks at commitment while Cal’s ready for a lifelong commitment. Their chemistry is powerful and the banter between them is wonderful.
I am captivated by Cal. He’s grounded yet incredibly romantic. He’s direct but prone to blushing. He’s an all round nice guy and is a master at dirty talking. He’s gentle and considerate but around Stella he turns into a bitey, growly man that makes me want to melt into a puddle. He’s ideal and I can’t even be annoyed at his perfection. Well, I think he’s perfect and I won’t hear otherwise.
Yes, I have more than a little crush on Cal but Stella’s more than worthy of him. She is terrific. She’s thriving professionally and personally she has her life set up in a way that works for her. But then along comes Cal who rocks the foundation she’s built her personal life upon.
But wait, there’s more! We also get a wonderful cast of secondary characters. On Cal’s side, we get to visit with some characters from the Walsh series. We also get to spend time with Sebastian Stremmel, who we met in Thresholds. I am still campaigning for him to get him own book. Stella brings with her a pair of endearing assistants who are constantly bickering. We also meet her wacky yet lovable family who introduced me to Bathtub Marys and Dominican Cake.
There are so many great things about BEFORE GIRL. I loved it and highly recommend it.
Cal (the Manbrick) Hartshorn is an all or nothing kind of guy. He’s sweet, smart, successful and slightly awkward. He’s ex Army and a cardiothoracic surgeon. For a while now he’s loved Stella from afar - she’s the woman he sees everyday on his run. She’s the woman that he wants to know and love, a woman he doesn’t know how to introduce himself too. Stella Allesandro is a woman who knows her own mind. She’s in sports publicity, usually keeping misbehaving professional sports stars in line without breaking a sweat. They finally meet and Cal immediately decides that he wants her to be his forever, however Stella isn't convinced she's anyone's forever... These two are seriously wonderful. They’re strong, independent people who suddenly experience an explosive chemistry, an attraction and feelings they’ve previously never felt. And it’s not some kind of young love thing either, these guys are proper adults who’ve lived, experienced things and are accomplished professionals. Something about these two draws you in, and keeps you reading. It’s the kind of book that you just devour. Kate Canterbary has written another winner!
Cal and Stella - otherwise known as the man-brick and sweet thing, made for a fun read as they got to know each other and tried to navigate between the different expectations they both had in regards to a relationship/non-relationship.
Cal, an ex-army ranger, now surgeon, had SO MANY feelings for Stella. I have to say that initially I thought he was a little over the top with his obsessive/slightly stalkerish ways with Stella, but he definitely grew on me throughout the story.
Stella is a strong, independent woman, with a job she excels at. It's a time consuming job, and she has convinced herself the lifestyle she has grown accustomed to is all that she needs. She doesn't need a relationship, she's anti-commitment, she has non-dates when needed to meet her needs. AND THEN Cal bowls her over when she's least expecting it, turning her carefully structured life upside down.
Of course there was a little bit of angst, but overall this was a fun read. Stella's family added humour to the story as well, her Mum and Dad were hilarious.
The wait for Cal and Stella has been so worth. Kate Canterbary does it again with characters that are instantly likeable and you rooting for the whole way through. Who can't help loving a sexy rumbly growly man-brick with a heart of gold . As always its sexy , witty and incredibly clever. Everyone need to read Kate Canterbary
