This really is 10 star material. The anticipation for the release of this book was almost too much to bear and finishing it is bittersweet, because it’s the last book in the Winston series and it was absolute perfection. This book is William Shakespeare Winston (Billy) & (Scarlet) Claire McClure’s book. It’s a second chance romance. Throughout the six previous books we have had glimpses and snippets of interactions between Billy and Claire and very early on, there were “pings” of awareness that something significant had taken place between these two characters. My interest in them was fully loaded and finally in the 6th book (Beard With Me) Penny gave her readers the back story of Billy & Scarlet, a beautiful, pure, innocent and raw account of their young love that just tore me apart. So now finally, we get to see how they overcome all the past hurts & anger to get to a forever that is so deserved & so awesome! This book takes place mainly in Tuscany, far away from the Winston’s home town of Green Valley. Set soon after the end of Roscoe & Simone’s book. Most of the Winston family are on vacation, Roscoe & Simone are still recovering in Green Valley but the rest of the clan have schemed and conspired, (all valiantly lead by Cletus of course), to make sure Billy & Claire finally get a chance to find their happy place. There was a lot of past hurt, lies & anger to overcome for the two leads and Penny fleshed out the relationship development perfectly, there was a lot of push/pull but the natural way Billy & Claire came together again & reconnected was totally believable. Getting them together so they could talk was a series of hilarious setups by the family. So, some pages in this book had me in tears and others had my chuckling and left a huge smile on my face. What made it so special was the fact that all the Winston clan had a huge role in the book, so you get to see all the beloved characters again This book is an absolute must read, to enjoy it to it’s fullest it can’t be read as a standalone, you have to read the Winston series to appreciate the whole dramatic lead up to it. Absolutely one of my all time favourites and I think Billy Winston just jumped to the top of my leading man list.
Loved the prequel and loved this beautiful, much anticipated finale!
I remember pondering over whether to read 'The Winston Brother's' books - with the odd cross stitch covers, the beards, and all. But upon reading book 1, I quickly connected with the story's philosophy, tuned into Penny's unique writing style and fell for the charm of the characters. It has become my all-time favourite series. The whole Winston family have made an impact, with their deep love, fierce loyalties, quirks, strengths/weaknesses, honesty and ... shenanigans.
While I've loved all the books, I always had a soft spot for Billy. The prequel really gave us necessary insight into the harsh backgrounds of both Billy and Scarlett (Claire) and their tragic love story.
'Beard Necessities' doesn't rush into quick solutions for our two lovlies. How could it, when the two main characters were fractured and the complicated past needed to be patiently untangled? However, in true Penny Reid style she eventually pulls them together like magnets, allowing for passion, communication, respect, healing, unconditional love and complete understanding (all the Winston's have input into the delightful HEA in an unexpected setting).
Penny's writing is flawless, heartfelt, humourous and full of Reidisms, but I was struck by how much she must love her characters, from the way she takes great care to tell their stories with such tenderness, attention to detail, insight and affection. I enjoyed every page of 'BN' and the epilogue is unforgettable. Thank you Penny for Billy and Claire’s story as well as the whole, cherished series.
I have been looking forward to reading this book for SO LONG, I love the Winston Brothers series, and like all fans of the series have been anxiously waiting Beard Necessities. Finally, Billy and Claire/Scarlet's HEA has arrived. It's been a long time coming.
Beard Necessities confirmed that Cletus is always going to be a favourite of mine. He is a ( loving ) devious, sneaky schemer with his family - well, basically with everyone. I love how his brain works. He is hilarious and I ADORE HIM!
There was so much Winston family goodness in this book. The siblings are determined that Billy is going to get what ( or who ) he has always wanted. Their assistance is mostly frustrating for Billy, yet very entertaining for the reader. Lots of emotional and beautiful scenes between Billy and Claire......AND that epilogue. What a great way to finish a series.
It was good, but not quite as good as I had hoped after being left with an excellent cliffhanger (dramatic and heart wrenching without being too frustrating) with the previous book. I was a little disappointed that a whole lot of the story (years of events and angst) occurred off-page - it was shared by Claire/Scarlet reciting it to a friend (this happened, then this, then this) which meant the events lost a lot of the emotion in them IMO. Overall it was a decent read and I’m glad I read it to finish off the series. BUT my favourite part of the book was actually the preview of the upcoming book included at the end - the start of a new series it seems. Go Cletus and Jess 🙌
I was so hanging out for this book to come out. What did happen between these two when she first came back to Green Valley. And this book did not disappoint. I just loved the idea of the family getting together to plot about getting these two together. If anyone deserved a happy ending it was these guys. This book was the best of series in my opinion - although Cletus always has a special place in my heart and it was so great to see him here - meddling. I am so going to miss this family but I'm glad that we will get glimpses in the Smartypants books.
So much love for this story!! Beautifully crafted by Penny Reid!! Better than I hoped for and more! Billy and Scarlet’s love story is EPIC and totally worth reading from start to finish!! Definitely read the Winston series including Claire’s story. They may be standalone. But why read one, when you can read them all!!
In big series like the Winston brothers, I'm always most drawn to the 'sad' stories, the ones full of angst and longing. Penny Reid has such a beautiful way of mixing in humour and creating a joyful, satisfying resolution. I loved this book.
Penny Reid delivers another thoughtful, funny, un-put-down-able story. Cleverly ties all the threads of the series together, but also works on its own. If this is your first taste of Penny’s writing, hope you go back and read the other stories in this series (and her others). You’ll be glad you did.
