Plodding tale with a not very bright heroine
16 March 2019
Grrr, this is one of those reads where I kept checking the other reviews and questioning what book all those people were reading. So what went wrong for me? Not the title, that was great. And the author is well regarded. But oh, the woeful plodding, DULL, storyline. Sometimes I felt I was reading a street guide as the h walked along Fischer st, turned left at Candle lane, crossed Green st, Petal crescent.... you get it, I won't go on. And the unfolding plot was clunky and kind of stupid.
Which leads us to our heroine. Who was kind of stupid. At 27, I'm okay with her having no direction in life (thank you for telling me that over and over again in case I had missed it) but she acted like a dithering, teenage no nothing. She let everyone make decisions for her. Constantly made risky decisions and kept her fingers crossed that nothing would go wrong. Witnesses the vampire and magic but keeps ignoring the evidence, and is completely incapable of putting glaring clues together.
No... no... And the two romance potential leads? I swear if they stood any further in the background this could be considered a plain old mystery, and the ancient vampire and this YA acting heroine? Ick, cradle snatching.
