As Steven Fry’s other book ‘Mythos’, again a joy to read. Love his writing style and appreciate how Steven just gives us the stories and does not try to explain or find deeper meanings or whatever, it’s just the stories and so well done! A book that I will re-read regularly. So much information and great sense of humour. Love it. Highly recommended, as well as ‘Mythos’. Great books!
I absolutely loved Stephen Fry’s first foray in to the Greek Gods world (Mythos). It was interesting, informative and kept me listening. Heroes, for me however, is not so easy to listen to. There seemed to be a lot of tedious details, rundowns of family trees - a lot of information but not interesting information. I listened to it via Audible (which I LOVE hearing Stephen Fry’s voice) but I found my mind constantly wandering so I had to keep skipping back. Perhaps the first book contained lots of shorter stories where this had fewer stories that were much longer. It just didn’t hold my attention as easily. Kudos though for all the research and knowledge.
The need to intersperse the topic with "entertaining" dumbing down for the groundlings with titbits of salaciousness spoils this. A fan of Mr Fry I am not especially but I did hope that this would not get in the way. One hoped on a more focused on the topic and less on allowing personality to ooze fourth.
So much better than Mythos which I also enjoyed, but at times felt like a shopping list of names. This is all about the stories told and explained in away which takes you there. Totally love it listening to it again...
