The thoughts of the soldier are very interesting. It seems he saw it as a gruesome sporting contest. An assessment of whether his side was justified in its aggression seems to have missed him during the war. This is understandable considering the Nazi propaganda and the penalties for dissent within the ranks. At the end of the war the solider sees it as a waste because his side lost, but he still seems at that stage to miss the point that his side was in the wrong to start the war in the first place.
