Dave and Clete are not conventional law enforcement folk. They go into the sewers where the gargoyles and monsters live and they dispense justice. Smiley, who lives in the sewers permanently, helps (selectively) too. Burke uses metaphors brilliantly, he will take you to Akadiana and Bayou Teche and Montana too if you want to go. I haven't been but I feel as if I have. Find a seatbelt, it's a great ride.
I always look forward to the next book in the Dave Robicheaux series from JLB & this one does not disappoint. Packed with interesting characters, murders with what appears Tarot overtones & Clete Purcel in full flight. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a gritty crime novel from one of the masters of the genre!
I found myself occasionally switching to my well stocked non fiction e Kindle books not yet started on. I needed a break from the action. James is very skilled with his descriptions. I will be getting more of his other books, and when I am starting to get hyper active I know to switch temporarily to non fiction, whatever.
We should all get our James Lee Burke fix at least every couple of months. His evocative prose is a pure delight as he tells each intriguing story. I always look forward to at least one 'antebellum' dropped in on a page as we immerse ourselves in the story. Keep writing Mr Burke - already looking forward to your next novel.
