Gil is the scout master on the trail, what he does is check the trail ahead looking out for danger. He also has wagons full of merchandise he hires teamsters to drive the wagons across for him. Judith is heading west on a wagon Train with her brothers. She lost the man she was going to marry and left with her brothers. Woman and children would often walk they all worked together cooking for all of the people in their group.what a hard life walking thousands of miles. It’s not hard to have a few stragglers. Judith is no where to be seen and her brother is worried. Gil rides back and finds her only she is not alone she has found a child. He goes to scout out the child’s parents and finds they took a trail off the main trail due to sickness but were also robbed and the father is barely hanging on. He asks Gil to rais her daughter Anna who is 18 months. Gil promised he would find a loving home for her.
Judith has decided that she will care for little Anna. They are to far back to catch up with the train. Gil buried the couple and found some of Anna’s belongings. They spend the night and in the morning are awoken from Judith ‘s brothers and others from the train. They demand that Judith and Gil are wed. Because back then being alone with a woman can harm her reputation.
Loved this story very touching and well written.
