Apologies for starting with the negatives but there were a few bits where I felt that the story was a bit wonky like ‘fey don’t show emotions’= every fey showing some strong emotion for her. Time- who has a watch in this world? Who teaches them how to read a clock? They don’t own watches but know how to tell time in the sense of 8 after noon!! Just weird stuff like this that could have been done better, but overall, this was a really good story. I loved that she did not have Stockholm. I loved that many different types of love and bond were explored. The writing was fast and did it drag at all. All the emotions and feelings were justified and relatable! I will definitely wait for the next book!!
It was a long book but I barely noticed. It was incredibly engaging. The main character was a little naive and scared but I think she developed well particularly when her protective charm/voice tells her to toughen up. Overall I really liked and can't wait till the next book comes out.
I think you either like the fantasy genre, or you don't. If you like it, you make allowances for a few clichés, but you look forward to the author adding some authenticity to their trope. Admittedly, there were common themes in 'A Kingdom of Exiles' by S.B. Nova - a princess, buff battling warriors, a human kidnapped and taken to a fae kingdom and lots and lots of faeries. But, the author certainly made the story their own, in many ways. I loved this YA narrative and thought it hit the mark for the demographic (as well as for older fans of the genre). All the characters were individually drawn and richly developed (the MCs, Serena and Frazer, in particular). In addition, the plot (past and present) was well-thought-out and not overly crowded. Nova's writing was lyrical and packed with imagery - romance, complications, surprises, drama and action-packed adventure, too. What more could you want from a fantasy novel?
I never read a series until they are completed as it is just too long in between, but mistakenly purchased this thinking that was the case. By the time I realisied I was hooked! The main character is a bit weak and obviously out of her depth but she somehow manages to succeed in all her quests. Overall I really enjoyed this book. Loved all the characters (especially Cai) and feel I am getting to know them personally as the story progresses. Can't find any info on when the next book is likely to be released so will just have to impatiently wait I suppose. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. Well done Author!
