What a couple - I love Penelope and Jake xx
23 July 2018
It is with great pleasure that I write this review for "That Guy" by Kim Jones, as this is fabulous book that really hit the spot for me.
I have always felt a bit let down when I read reviews of books that others have just loved, that have made them cry with laughter and reduced them to fits of suppressed giggles only for them to not hit that mark for me. I am relieved to say that "That Guy" is NOT one of those books. I have reached the nirvana of Rom Com heaven here - I laughed out loud, I snorted through my lunch break and I shed quiet tears of laughter on the train on my daily commute to work (which is quite embarrassing on a peak hour train).
Right from the opening chapter you are drawn into Penelope and Jake's story as we meet the determined Penelope who is on a proxy revenge mission on behalf of her friend Emily. Penelope, through a series of events meets Jake (Swagger - what a fantastic name for our leading man) and gets to know him firstly as she uses him as a muse and inspiration for the book she is writing and then emotionally as she becomes further invested in their relationship.
What I particularly loved about this book was Penelope's constant inner monologue that sometimes burst out without her realising it. She is a fabulous character that isn't your typical wacky "crazy cat lady" caricature that many leading ladies become in rom-coms. She is more than a match for Jake who transitions from alpha (is he or isn't he) dom to the swoon worthy leading man as the book progresses.
"That Guy" is a clever, snappily written book that pays subtle homage to many books out there that may have been cause for inspiration for Kim Jones clever writing but it does not take itself seriously and that just makes it more enjoyable. I would give it 6 stars if I knew how and I can only hope that Emily and Cam get their own equally clever, snortworthy book in time and that Penny and Jake feature prominently as I think they may well have become one of my favourite book couples of the year.
