I think I'm going to be joining a long line of people who think 'What the Wind Knows' is absolutely awesome!
Oh...where to start?
Amy Harmon's writing is superb and the research is thorough. It has all the elements of great storytelling, with the result being a graceful, mesmerizing historical romance. The book could've become overly complicated or crowded with its mix of past/present or fact/fiction scenes (including politics, ethics and societal values), but Amy's plot planning is seamless and logical, right to the conclusion where everything just clicks.
MC, Anne Gallagher feels devastated because her beloved grandfather, Eoin, dies; so she travels to Lough Gill, Ireland to spread his ashes. There in a misty moment, magic happens and Anne is transported to another time. She meets Dr Thomas Smith, a reflective, unobtrusive and benevolent man; ordinary, but an understated hero...yet, there's something more to him. All the characterisation is simply brilliant.
'What the Wind Knows' is a total experience and Amy really stepped up to the challenge of this very personal trope. At the same time her style is easy and fluid. My emotions are still swirling about: heartbreak, tenderness, fantasy, empathy, real life, perspectives...so much to absorb! This is a very special read!
This was such a special read... so much more than an exquisite romance... Amy Harmon has weaved a tale intertwining past and present Ireland, mixing historical facts with ordinary people’s lives. It is also a love letter about her ancestors' homeland and the incredible bond of family through the ages.
Thomas and Anne were clearly destined soulmates. The feelings they have for each other were utterly divine. ‘What the Wind Knows’ uses a mix of fictional characters and real historical figures, the reader is given a gripping glimpse of what it would have been like living in such severe times in Ireland in the early 1920’s.
The core of the story is about Anne Gallagher who is unexpectedly given a chance to understand where she came from. Anne has found professional success and acclaim as an author, but her career has dominated her life for far too long. Suddenly however this strong and steady man in front of her is showing her the importance of family.
Thomas is an amazing character, he is soulful and kind and his deep and abiding love for Anne is so passionate in his journal entries it was a delight to read. Together they made such a wonderful couple and I enjoyed getting to know them.
‘What the Wind Knows’ is truly a gem of a book. It shows that love is timeless. It will make your heart want to explode. This story is beautiful, magical and it’s a wonderful experience. A definite must read!
Beginning in America in 2001, Anne is faced with losing her beloved grandfather. She takes her grandfather's ashes back to Ireland as he requested, and is drawn into another time. This is 1921, when the Irish were fighting for independence, with Michael Collins at the forefront. I was totally drawn into this incredible story, and even when I wasn't reading, it was constantly on my mind. The book is a romance, a history book, and time travel all rolled into one unputdownable read. Amy Harmon is a new author to me; I loved her writing and her thorough research. This is a book I would highly recommend.
A wonderfully crafted story filled with a tragic history about a New Yorker named Anne, her Grandfather Eoin and the way the hands of time brought them together. The past is her future and Ireland holds her heart.
When I first started reading the book, I could see exactly where it was headed, but then Ireland turned it all upside down and the ending wasn't what I had expected... I love being surprised by a story! Brilliant!
This historical novel depicts through a love story, the turbulent years of 1921-2 in Ireland. Michael Collins, who was one of the major players is sympathetically but fairly portrayed. The writing is beautiful and the love story of Anne and Tomas is sensitively crafted. I got warmth when reading these pages.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! What a wonderful story!! Not only did it connect me with my ancestors, it bought to life a time that is difficult to understand for us living in this modern world. I loved it and I cried at the end, not often a story can do that to me anymore!!
I love the way that Amy Harmon has woven fact and fiction into a beautiful tale of love, loyalty and treachery. The lyrical writing style is easy to read and you can hear the voices speaking. I could feel myself smiling, sighing and even holding my breath at times as the plot unfolded to reach its hoped for, but unexpected conclusion.
I find it difficult to describe the sense of recognition of reincarnate destiny that this book brought to my soul. The story is both fascinating and compelling. One cannot help wondering how Any came upon the plot, was it simply imagination or an innate sense of the truth of time? I also have anew respect for the wind! Thank you Amy for many hours of enjoyment.
