Midsomer comes to the fens
11 January 2019
A reasonable police procedural which well worn characters which has a little too much embroidery. Joy doesn't quite pull it off which is a shame. So okay but not fantastic.
There are a few threads in this story. The very able DI Galena and her partner Joe Easter lead a very thorough police investigation. Her mother and friends do a Miss Marple or more correctly Father Brown providing breakthroughs and using their contacts to progress the case. There is a possible secret society, a cover up in the higher levels, and a retired fire investigator. Then there are the murders and fires.
The problem is that there is no subtlety about banging in the clues. There are significant logic gaps which are irritating. Perhaps a streamlining would cause Joy to concentrate on the story lines
The tension seems to have gone out of the relationships between our leading characters. The characters seem more two dimensional and less real.
I thought that the reaction to a colleague's death was unfeeling and contrasted to a frivolous party was inappropriate
Perhaps Joy needs to decide which genre she wishes to pursue and stop diluting her talent into unnecessary complexity.
