Small but Powerful!
17 March 2019
The RM mini 3 from my experience is awesome, the device is small (fits in the hand), easy to set up and can control all of my IR devices in my lounge room. It's worth noting that this needs to be plugged into the power to operate (no internal battery) and comes with a usb cable (but now power plug). You need to download the apps from the app store (QR code in user manual), and from there the app is very straight forward to select or learn in your IR controlled devices. I set up 4 devices:
1) LG TV : I found preset controls for this in the app (I had to select TV from a list)
2) SATELLITE set top box (generic after market): I could not find presets in the app, but the app has a learn mode and I was able to learn the controls by me pressing the original remote and programming each button individually.
3) AIR CONDITIONER: There were no presets that worked for my air-con, however I was able to learn in the controls for my air-con.
4)SMART SOCKET / SWITCH: I was able to connect the Smart Switch into the same app and control another device in my land room. This device can now turn on my air-con from 7m away with the app (the original remote, I had to stand 2m away).
The only downside is finding a central location with power for the device to get line of site to each programmed device which is not practical. The solution for me, moving forward will be to utilise a spare powerbank and use it to power the device from the coffee table (which is central in the room and line of sight to each of my devices. It takes up a lot less room than the previous pile of remote controls and can now be controlled in one app.
A cool thing that I discovered was that you can set up custom buttons for your devices and learn combinations and give the programmed function a custom name and logo, I have my favourite satellite channels programmed in and can jump to them by pushing the icon button on the app and it is good to have a visual to do this quickly.
You can also set up scenes with very specific timings to bring devices on when you want and in a sequence of your choosing at the push of a button or preset timer.
VOICE CONTROL: the voice control from the native app does not work unless you speak Chinese. The simple solution to this is to connect it with Alexa or similar product and use that for voice control and integration to your wider system (but not essential if you don't want voice control - like me).
Overall: This works without Alexa or similar, it is a great product for a super low price (cheaper than buying a universal learning remote) and a good way to dip your toe into the Smart Home scene without breaking the bank.
