TL;DR: Excellent value for a solid keycap set; try to ignore the "M".
I've spent 3x ~ 4x what these cost on caps. I have some from maxkeys, and some from massdrop, and some from pimp my keyboard. This is the third YMDK "knock off" set I have purchased.
For the money, they represent excellent value. The plastic is not as nice as more expensive caps. It's still a step up from whatever shipped with your cheap board. Are they double shot, or dye sublimated? Nope. Pad printed for sure. Will the legends fade with use? Yes they will. My two year old DSA Dolch knock offs, which these replaced, still had easily readable legends. Were some keys faded? Yes. Were they perfectly functional and usable still, absolutely.
I could get the original carbon keycaps in SA or DSA, as opposed to OEM. I would also pay nearly $150 for them once they were in my hands in Canada. I'd prefer SA, but OEM isn't bad.
Overall the colours are really nice. The pad printing of the legends is clear and lined up properly. The keycap quality is solid. They are consistently shaped, no flashing, no warping, and they fit snugly. They're nice to type on. They could be a little thicker, but I've certainly had worse. O-rings are totally worth installing on these.
I have one major complaint. The "M" key is an upside down "W". Once seen, it cannot be unseen. I don't know why. The original carbon set has a proper "M". I'm ignoring it.
My only other complaint is that I wish YMDK would put out some of these in SA as opposed to OEM. SA is a nicer sculpt that suits these types of keycaps better.
Bottom line is simple: if you have a cheap mechanical keyboard, and there's nothing wrong with that, spice it up with these keycaps. They look nice, they feel nice, and anything beats the ugly black shine through caps with the scifi legends font. Keycaps are pictured on a cheapo mechanical eagle TKL board that I paid less than $50 for. I could have paid less, but I got the backlit version.
Ho dato quattro stelle non per la qualita' dei keycaps che sono ottimi, ma perché non possono essere utili su testiere meccaniche retroilluminate in quanto opachi. Ottimo spessore e una eccellente lavorazione.
Title says it all, doesn't it? It's a shame because the keycaps themselves feel ok. I was expecting heavier, for this price point. And now I'm concerned that the keycaps will scratch off over time because the dye is not of any decent quality. Pretty upset.
Did not give me an option for no stars. So here we are.
Love these keycaps!! I don't really like the edgy "gamer" style stuff, but I do love my clicky-clacky keyboard for writing, and these look all cool and retro on my desk. My only sight complaint is that the orange keys are super bright orange. If this company ever made a set with the orange keys a different colour, like a more muted or vintage looking brown, I'd buy it in a second!
I received my 2nd set with so many keys missing: no enter key, no tilt key, and no arrow keys :( First time something like that happens to me and now the stocks are out. Hopefully YMDK will see this review and promptly address it. Will update review if that is the case.
