U 50x66 Karen Moriarty's review May 04, 2018 · edit it was amazing bookshelves: to-read
Another beautifully written and crafted story by a very gifted and talented author. Ella Fields has done it again with this very raw and emotional read.. We briefly met Toby and Pippa in Ellas last book Suddenly Forbidden and get to learn more about them in this amazing book.
This is so much more than just a story about a young couple navigating the waters of a new relationship.
Toby and Pippa jumped into my heart from the very first pages of this book and that is where they stayed until l turned the very last one, and even know l often find myself thinking of these two.
Toby is so much more than just the typical college jock, we learn early on that he comes with his own demons that he lives with and fights daily. Pippa is also carrying baggage from her childhood, but when they find themselves mutually attracted to each other we see them trying to navigate these uncharted waters
Touching on a very real and raw topic such as "mental illness", Toby and Pippa both find themselves falling hard for the other, and as in all relationships go thru their own trials.
Thru this whole emotional read what l loved, was the way that both Toby and Pippa were addressing similar issues relating to everyday challenges.. This was a couple that you just wanted to jump into the book and make everything better for them both, but watching them struggle and the twists and turns that this book takes along the way has your heart rejoicing and then breaking the very next minute....
It was one of my very favorite reads for the year, and l would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to take an emotional journey... You will feel everything and so much more...I don't want to give anymore away as l really don't think l could do it justice, because sometimes it is just a single word or a look or even just a sentence that has you questioning things you thought you knew, well it did for me.. Simply put this book for me was about vulnerability, and fearlessness and self awareness that comes to us all in many ways... LOve takes many forms and l enjoyed this emotional roller coaster more than l ever expected too... Sensational read....
I have read a lot of amazing books this year so far and each have been 4-5 stars. But this book deserves 10. Wow. This book is eye opening. You are introduced to pippa and toby in suddenly forbidden. And of course, the way ella fields writes, you have already fallen in love with both of them and need to know more. Mental health isnt often touched on in books about romance, i am guessing becaude it is seen as far too messy and will offend. But you know what?! It needs to be done. And done beautifully and given justice like Ella has done. In her foreword she says the book only touches on a small part of it but it really opens your mind up and you become even more emotionally invested. This book is freaking amazing and beautiful and it was a real struggle to put down. Anyone who reads it will walk away with a different view and I think thats what makes it so special. Keep writing Ella and I will be here to keep reading.
We're five months into the year and many great stories have been published. I fell in love with many of them. Unexpectedly but unashamedly. Bittersweet Always is, without question, one of them.
Ella Fields delivers an emotionally raw and heartfelt story so wonderfully and beautifully. Bittersweet Always ignited my heart, shattered it into tiny pieces and repaired it haphazardly, only to destroy it again. Over and over.
In Suddenly Forbidden, I admired Daisy's roommate Pippa, a fierce friend and intelligent young woman. And oh how easy it was to fall in love with Toby, Quinn's roommate and teammate, with his flirtatious charms and seeming easygoing attitude.
Many novels attempt to explore mental illness, which is often stigmatised and generally an overall difficult subject for society to approach. Some authors succeed in this exploration; others simply don't, but Ms Fields conquers this issue with integrity and honesty. She doesn't sweep mental illness under the figurative rug, but she also doesn't sugar coat it. Bittersweet Always is raw. Real.
Both heart warming and heart wrenching.
Ms Fields writing is intoxicating and flawless. It is eloquent, with every word written across the pages having significant importance and meaning. It will seep deep into your bones, weave its way through your psyche. You will feel every emotion through her words, her descriptions, but especially through her amazing characters.
When we were introduced to Toby Hawthorne in Suddenly Forbidden, I knew he would create an interesting story. He is complex; he is human. Demons haunt Toby, pushing him towards a dangerous path of self destruction and self hatred. His inner struggles and turmoil are handled with utmost respect and empathy, making every scene powerfully represented.
Pippa is an amazing character. A fierce friend to Daisy and the light to Toby's darkness, she is forgiving, selfless and mature despite her young age. Having watched her own mother suffer from loving someone with mental illness, Pippa is scared to experience something as heartbreaking.
She will learn through firsthand experience love isn't easy. And that's one of my favourite things about Bittersweet Always. Its realistic and brutally honest representation of relationships, what it truly means to love someone, especially someone who cannot love their self.
I absolutely adore Pippa and Toby's story. It is beautiful; both heart warming and heart wrenching; pure, honest but also dark, terrifying. It is real. Passionate. Intense. They have an intoxicating, all consuming love. Ms Fields is an amazing story teller who handles every sensitive topic with poise and grace. You cannot fault her ability to write.
Ella Fields you have completely blown my mind yet again with your words. seriously people once you read one of ella bosky are hooked.. Toby and Pippa there are so many words i could say for those two, when we were first introduced to them in suddenly forbidden i knew that there story was going to be an emotional rollercoaster and this book was but wow just wow!!! you laugh, cry scream at the pages and want to throw your kindle some points in a good way lol but it was so worth it all... thank you ella for talking about subjects that are hard and also on mental health which it is and can be hard to read and i bet to write but the way you do helps so much and understanding it all. congratulations on another amazing book seriously one of my fav reads of 2018 so far <3
College sweethearts Pippa & Toby took us on an emotional journey with some ups and downs in their relationship! With Toby suffering from a mental illness and Pippa wanting to help Toby! Can Pippa and Toby make it to the other side? Love hearing poor about the secondary characters in this story!
A wonderful story that was gripping and so very emotional, many times it was heartbreaking, sometimes extremely frustrating but so wonderfully written and the characters were all I expected them to be. This is Pippa and Toby's story. Ella certainly has a way with words that draws all the emotions from you with her superb writing that takes us the reader on a journey with them both and what they endure along the way.
The book touches on a subject that is very common but no one really likes to talk about or try to deal with it because often they don't know how. I thought Ella dealt with the subject matter really really well and that comes across in this story. Pippa and Toby were two of the most interesting characters to read about, Toby stole a piece of my heart almost instantly. I so felt his pain and the struggles he faced everyday and I loved that Pippa was there for him, even though at times she was way out of her depth, she tried so hard.
This is much more of an emotional story than the first book Suddenly Forbidden. This book is all about feelings, emotions and the struggles those problems bring and how these two wonderful characters learn to deal with them. They can be all read as standalone's but all the characters are friends so each book interconnect, and anyway they are so good you need to start at the beginning and work your way through them.
An incredible book with addictive characters that are so easy to connect with they feel like they are your friends, you are in that story with them, you live and breathe them, that's how good this book is. A definite MUST read !!!
I’m left a little emotional after this book. The first ~40% is Toby and Pippa’s story that runs at the same time as Quinn and Daisy from Suddenly Forbidden. Which left us knowing that Toby was kicked off the football team and left town. It’s the follow up to this, hearing what Toby’s actual diagnosis is, the trauma that he and Pippa then go through because of this was the hard part for me as I completely understood this. I found it sweet when Toby finally got himself healthy and just kept showing up on Pippa in a gentle way so that she couldn’t forget him. I love extended epilogues that are many years in the future and this one worked well. It closed their story well by showing Toby and Pippa with jobs that suited them well.
I finished this book days ago and I am still processing how I feel about it . Ella's writing as always is beautiful and she is not frightened to write about subjects that people don't want to deal with. Mental health and all it brings is incredibly hard to write but Ella absolutely nailed it. It was emotional , heart wrenching and written with such sensitivity I cried for an age. I have to admit I didn't think I could finish this book but only because it brought up so many personal emotions and memories that I couldn't read it through my tears. I loved loved Pippa and Toby's journey together that I couldn't not finish this beautiful book which I found very cathartic!
We know some of this story as we met Toby and Pippa in book one but we were left with so many questions so I was really happy to find they ere getting a book.
The author did an amazing job humanising Toby’s struggles, I know nothing about mental illness but this story gives the reader a window into his life which at time’s was truly heartbreaking. Getting inside Toby’s head, hearing his inner thoughts made me sad but watching him struggle to become stronger gave me such hope and optimism for his future.
A truly life affirming emotional superbly written story.
Wow this book was amazing on so many levels. As a person with mental health that I’ve had majority of my life Thankyou for putting a spotlight on it and Thankyou for the way you wrote it and giving people who don’t know or understand a glimpse into that world. So many raw emotions from both Toby and Pippa and sometimes (a lot) I felt like I was reading about myself. Ella congratulations on a beautiful, emotional, eye opener book. Toby holds a special place in my heart. ❤️
