This book didn't challenge my reading abilities; I don't know if I'm a better person for having read it. What I do know is that I had a wonderful time reading it and if I could wipe it from my mind I would, just so that I could read it for the first time all over again. This book is just what I need when I want a night in, dressed in pyjamas, eating something chocolatey. This book is to me what (we were told) Pride & Prejudice has been to women for decades.
I love this take on a princess story, the reluctant heroine forced into royal drama is always fun. I also love that the key love interest has their own reservations about the royal life. Rachel Hawkins was able to keep the story grounded, reminding us that there is an element to classism in any royal story while still keeping me swept away.
The casual queer inclusion in the story was wonderful and much-needed in the romance genre.
