Love Mark Edwards, but there were some issues for me...
23 October 2018
I love Mark Edwards, and this offering certainly has his trademark twists and turns, and kept me guessing. I didn't guess who did what, and I suspected everyone at different times! He is a masterful author in that sense, since I fall into every trap of thinking I'm ahead of him only to realise I'm two steps behind. Bravo.
However. The writing in this one felt a little undercooked, like he could have given it another month sitting in a dark drawer and then taken it out to look over it again, just to give it some distance. There is some awkward phrasing and there's an awful lot of in-the-head monologuing and thinking through things.
VERY MILD CONTENT SPOILERS FOLLOW.
Also...I'm not massively keen on the way he tied in the current #MeToo movement. Yes, it's important. Yes, it's important for men to support the movement. But things are skated over here, and while I think many women have wanted to punch a creepy guy in the nose more than once in our lives, we haven't, because we know it will only escalate things. I'm not saying Edwards has gone full I Spit On Your Grave or anything. It just struck me as an off-key note.
I'm not even sure what I would prefer him to do. I like that he brought it up. It just...didn't quite land for me.
That said, this is certainly a great twisty book with some genuinely creepy moments, and I'm glad I read it. I pre-order all his books, and I'm certainly going to pre-order the next.
