A Strong Start To This Supernatural Series
8 April 2018
Shadow Kissed is a new take on the supernatural. We have witches, vampires, demons, and shifters, not to mention death personified. In a world where magic is the norm, and yet witches live in fear of practicing it due to Hunters, Gray is living her life hiding from what she truly is; a witch. After accidentally resurrecting a young girl, Gray finds that ignoring her magic may no longer be possible.
Gray was a great main character. She was headstrong and resilient, while still having a soft heart and a kind personality. The side characters were complex and the guys, 1x vampire, 2x demons, 1x shifter, and death himself, were perfect as the men in Grays life - and soon to be reverse harem. The intricate relationship ties between each character were well thought out and portrayed, especially between Ronan and Gray (the history there). And the tension and heat between Gray and the guys matched the tempo of the plot perfectly - there are some steamy scenes but still more on the medium burn side.
Piper’s writing is well thought out and is easy to lose yourself in. In the first few chapters, I had to really fight not to bawl like a five year old. The raw emotion and pain that Piper portrays in the story is gripping, but I hate crying in front of my husband when I’m reading as he has no idea what I’m crying about and it’s too hard to explain properly - I also didn’t want to be distracted from the book with well meaning queries whether I am okay (I do appreciate his concern though). There are a couple of minor editing errors but nothing to write home about (pun intended) and they are few and far between.
My only real complaint is that it didn’t feel like there was a real climax to the story. I understand it is the first book in the series and as such it works great as an introduction to The Witch’s Rebels. And I am looking forward to the next book.
I’d highly recommend to lovers of supernatural, reverse harems, and urban fantasy.
