Ms Clark has recreated life in pre-war China through the eyes of Australian expatriates. This is a fascinating story of ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges as their world erupts into war. I didn't want to put this book down.
I've read all of Ms Clark's books, she never disappoints. Stone of Heaven and Earth is a journey back to the beginning of WW1 when many sons, brothers, and uncles joined the army. When it wasn’t easy for young women, sisters, Ann and Darl to take the exciting, nevertheless frightening journey to a foreign country such as China. I was drawn into the culture the moment their ship hit the docks. The sights, crowds, colours and smells pull you in as you take the journey with these two lovely young women. The dialogue for the times is real. It isn’t long before the young married couples are confronted with ruthless cruelty. Perseverance kept them going on their journey of love and life that played through these turbulent times. An absorbing read that will enchant and capture your heart.
