Monsters is a fantastic story by Melissa Jane. This is quite gripping and full of mystery- it’s a chilling account of murder, obsession, being hunted, lots of danger, shocking abuse, sweet love, heart-breaking grief, fearful stalking, and an incredibly twisted game of cat and mouse. This is my first read by Ms. Jane, and I have to say she nailed the tension and suspense- building the apprehensive feeling superbly. I was on the edge of my seat, avidly reading, trying to figure out what was going on and where the author was taking me. This story starts with a childhood friendship- a young girl and the two boys next door. One is her best friend- the other, her tormentor. On a stormy night she sees something out her bedroom window but can’t fathom what she’d seen. Lightning, thunder, rain, mud and blood- her mind can’t quite process it all. Then the next day the boy’s family up and moves, no goodbyes, no contact. She grows up, makes a nice life for herself- with a great job as a coordinator at a popular art gallery, has a nice apartment, good friends, a wonderful boyfriend, and a loving family. But things unravel quite quickly- strange things and frightening things happen when the police appear to ask her some questions about a cold case they are working on. This also opens up old wound, brings up old feelings- and then the nightmare begins all over again. Only this time she isn’t the timid young school girl she once was. This story was really very good. Ms. Jane delivered all the chills in this gripping tale. I will certainly be looking for more of her work. The story is told from present time, as well as flashbacks into the past. It has quite a few surprises, and I was kept guessing the whole way through the story. There were touching moments, shocking moments and emotional points. I can’t wait to read more from Melissa Jane!
This story is all engrossing and wil keep you turning the pages. Told in the 'then' and 'now' time frame you get the whole story unravelling right before your eyes. Melissa Jane takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. It's a story of young love, friendship, jealousy and seeking revenge. The pain and suffering that Lucas, Mason and Gemma endured is heart breaking. Just remember that this is a psychological thriller and contains triggers. It's not for the faint of heart. I recommend this book.
What a great psychological thriller this was, I've had this to read for a while now, and don't know why I waited so long to get around to reading it. The unfolding of the past events and secrets, interspersed with the unfolding of current events was done really well and had me turning pages wanting to know what had happened and what was going to happen. I look forward to reading more by Melissa Jane.
What a ride !!! Melissa Jane has created a novel that will have you gripping your book and biting your nails as the highly dramatic, captivating story unravels culminating in a climax that will just leave you gobsmacked. Just brilliant!!!
A suspenseful tale about secrets, love, murder and one man’s twisted obsession. Monsters had me intrigued from the moment I read the blurb. I love a good romantic thriller and have always enjoyed Melissa Jane’s books in the past. Needless to say, when this book arrived on my kindle I dived right in with excitement.
Monsters read in present and past tense which I personally enjoyed in this book a lot more than I usually would. Generally, I find it frustrating because it feels choppy and can ruin the flow of a story. But in Monsters, the flashbacks to Mason, Gemma and Lucas’s childhoods almost felt necessary for story development. Monsters wouldn’t have unravelled in the same suspenseful way it did without those well-placed flashbacks to add to a reader’s intrigue.
This book unfolded effortlessly thanks to Melissa Jane’s strong writing and capable storytelling. The pace was perfect and there was never a dull moment. It is also very light on romance and steam. To be honest it turned out completely different to how I thought it would. I was waiting for a big twist or surprise that I feel never came. Although I believe that’s probably because I figured out each piece of the mystery early on. Which if you read this, you may not figure it out as early and end up getting a big surprise. In saying all this, I smiled and swooned at how the story ended and enjoyed every moment that led to it.
Don’t think I have read a book quite like this one before. But I have to say Melissa totally nailed it. This book will catch your attention within the first few pages and in my opinion, it really doesn’t slow down throughout the book. The book starts off with Gemma looking out her window on a stormy night to see her best friend Lucas and her mortal enemy Mason covered in blood loading a wrapped-up body into the car. Mason and Lucas are not only brothers, but they are also her neighbours She also knows she can’t say nothing about what she has seen or her life to could be in danger. We then catch up with Gemma ten years later where her past will catch up with her. She now has a job she loves in one of the leading art galleries, has a boyfriend she loves and a wonderful home of her own. But what is going to happen now that her past has suddenly become part of her present.? Will Gemma lose everything she has worked so hard to find? She also has to be worried about her safety right? Readers of murder, mystery and romance will love this book.
