Born of Embers blew my mind on such an emotional level.
I’m not a fan of stories that contain strong physical abuse, especially towards women, but once I started the journey I was so entranced by the heroines story that I didn’t once consider putting the book down, I simply couldn’t.
In this series we are introduced to Nix, an 18 y.o. girl who hides a horrific past behind a beautiful face and a sassy attitude. Tired of being a victim, she finds the strength within her to leave the past behind by heading to college in the most far reaching place her hard earned savings can afford. Alaska.
A new place and a chance of a fresh beginning where no one knows her past and she can hopefully have a normal life without fear.
Killian, Hiro, Damien, Ryder and Theo. Five alpha males who are gorgeous, smart, incredibly sexy and gifted with mythological power. When they meet Nix, each of them is instantly captivated by her fragile beauty, her feisty attitude and her strong independent nature. They have every intention of making her theirs.
The males in this series are so heartbreakingly sweet. The patience and caring they show towards Nix in her vulnerable moments was so beautiful. Don’t get me wrong, they are still very much alpha males and there was plenty of entertaining and often hilarious ‘battle of the will’ moments between Nix and the guys as she learns to open up and trust them.
With Nix's abusive past, the writer could’ve easily given her the ‘pushover’ trait but she didn’t. Instead we get to witness how her past experiences only made her so much stronger. Also Nix's almost childlike curiosity about the world was both endearing and refreshing.
Leaves on a cliff-hanger. Looking forwards to the next instalment.
This book hooked me from page 1! Such a unique and intriguing take on shifters - not only do we have 'normal' animal shifters, but we also have mythological shifters. Beings based on the myths and legends from different cultures, so we get to see gargoyles, cerapters (not unicorns!), kitsune, kraken, Luca and phoenixes to name a few. I loved that there are also additional powers and abilities that accompany the main shifter abilities- usually aligned with the type of shifter.
The world building was brilliantly done, and the storyline flowed really well. Perfect editing - I couldn't fault it.
The character development, and the characters themselves, would be some of the best I've read recently. The alternating POV for some chapters really helped you see the guys' thoughts - remember it's the quiet ones to watch out for! Nix is an amazing FMC - she has been through absolute hell growing up - both from her father and also in foster care when she managed to escape her father's clutches at various intervals. That she is still sane and striving to have a positive outlook on her future is testament to how strong she really is. She's sassy, doesn't take crap from anyone, but is also a little broken. I know it sounds bad, but I actually love that she's so broken - this is not a normal shifter girl meets boy, has instant connection and despite some angst ends up with the HEA they were destined for - not at all! Nix can't stand to be touched - which shocks the guys and her roommate who grew up around shifters, craving touch for care and nurture. While the attraction is there between Nix and the guys (Ryder, Killian, Theo, Damien and Hiro) they thankfully know they need to take it easy with her. That doesn't mean there's no acting on those feelings, just that it's not rushed and is on Nix's terms.
I'm definitely interested in where the series goes, and would recommend this to anyone who likes a good shifter or RH book. I will also add that I'm happy book 2 is out already so I don't have to wait to keep reading.
What a way to jump into the world of mythological shifters! Here, we follow along as Nix learns about who she is and discovers a world she never knew existed. She begins to find her place in the world, along with some amazing people who she slowly learns to trust and befriend. Not too happy with the ending (only because it's a cliffhanger and now I have to wait for Hidden in Smoke to come out on March 31), but the overall book is great! The writing flows easily, with descriptive commentary when needed and silence used when the moment calls for it. Can't wait to see what comes next! Thank you Quinn Arthurs & Harper Wylde!
I haven't cried reading a book in forever till now. This This book undid me, it's raw and powerful that broke my heart and made me realize how lucky am i, because I know that lots of women , men children suffers from abused and mostly from the people they trust. It's very confronting issue but it's reality for a lot of people. I'm a bit peeve of the ending but I just have to get the next book I suppose. I really enjoyed this book and it's a different and fresh take of the supernatural.
I rarely write reviews but I couldn't not for this one. Awesome, refreshing storyline and characters. I couldn't put it down... got only an hour or two of sleep because of this book... while I was at work all I wanted to was get home to read more... LOVE! When is next one coming out? lol And the two other book sneak previews at end.... When are they to be released? They seem like they'll be just as good!
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I've found a lot of the reverse harem style books have very little character development and what there is of it is centred around the heroine only. I enjoyed the story building and that the authors are building a relationship between the group without relying the insta love phenomenon. Great start to a series and I can't wait for more!
Really enjoyed this interesting take on shifters. It is RH but the shifters are mythological creatures, which makes it different. The MFC if fairly fragile but seems to be developing throughout the story, the male characters are very likeable. The story is well written and flows nicely without a prophecy insight at this stage. Really look forward to see where this is going. Highly recommend
Born of embers has fulfilled every shifter fantasy I’ve ever had. Since a young girl reading x-men comics. I have always loved Jean Grey and her alter ego Phoenix. Imagine my absolute joy when I saw this title “Born of Embers: PHOENIX rising”🤗
I was captivated by the story line, intrigued by the characters and heartbroken by Nix’ tragic life. Her pain and panic was palpable and her men were absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I mean come on... a kraken ahhhhh! I’m emotionally invested in this story 😂 loved it!!!! T H A N K Y O U for this masterpiece
