Although this family origins story was, to me, a slow burn, I appreciate the quality of the writing and the translation; the plot construction employed; the absence of editorial errors; the development of the many characters over several decades; and finally how the whole jigsaw timeline of family bits came together. I'm glad that I persisted till the end, so for others who prefer more action, please read other reviews before dismissing what could be a surprising find. Highly recommended.
A very good read. After receiving an anonymous letter Eleanor then starts to to try discover more about her mother and her past history. I liked the way this book went from the 1980's to the present time. It was very interesting and kept your attention.
A mystery story that starts with Eleanor-Rigby (named after the song) receiving anonymous letters about her late mother’s early life. Intrigued, she follows the clues which lead her to uncover secrets about her mother and her mother’s family. Woven into the story are events occurring in three periods, the 1940’s, the 1980s, and the present time. The book has been translated from the original French and it is a tribute to the translator that the English text is very readable.
