Disclaimer: Reviews are subjective and not everyone is going to love books the same as the next person. I normally eat up KC Wells and Parker Williams books. For the most part I love them and like most avid readers I have my favorites. I especially loved Collars and Cuffs and who didn't hate Rob back when he tormented Alex? So a book where Rob has a change of mind, an Unlocked Mind was interesting enough for me to buy, way back on 17 Dec, and I haven't finished it yet. In fact sadly for me I definitely WNF.
So what didn't work for me?
I couldn't connect with Rob and at times I struggled to connect with Vic. I don't want to give spoilers away, so I'll just say, Rob reminded me of an angry Ant, angry, fiery and running around in circles, a self-absorbed twat who felt like he was owed something. A rude young man, who rather than work hard for what was his, with a positive kind attitude, he was an unfoundedly bitter snot who wasted his money, despite knowing he shouldn't just to try and prove a point to himself, ( that right there was where everything started going off the rails for me -I really couldn't connect with his reasoning there at all), despite him revealing his reasons to Vic later on.
Vic threw me a spanner, he came across a bit like the Salvation Army, there to give a hand if you let them, but a little wishy-washy unless really provoked, then if pressed enough you get the prerequisite lectures. He apparently could see sadness and a desire for someone to connect with Rob, all well and good except I asked myself this: What was Rob bringing to the relationship except bigotry, crappy behavior and a spoilt attitude?
I appreciate my not finishing the novel I can't truthfully say. For those of you out there that finish an Unlocked Mind, you'll know way more than me, but I can't say I'm sad about not knowing.
I made 45% before I gave up, so I could see the two men were forming a friendship of sorts, but I was sick of Rob by then and his eternal woe is me. When you compare Rob to Alex, same family, same troubles you can see why he is very hard to like. So for those that enjoyed this book, that's great, sadly I was not one of them. It doesn't mean it was unreadable, it just means it wasn't my cup of tea and for over $6 to buy and no Kindle Unlimited, yeah ouch that was a lame Christmas present to myself.
If I could give Rob some advice it would be to have a teaspoon of concrete...
4.5 Stars.. This is a beautiful story l loved Rob in this he's such a bratty sub. I definitely don't think he has boundaries with Vic. This story is about past histories and working through and making up for mistakes for Rob. The bdsm club scenes were fluffy which Rob gets away with a lot for disobeying orders. Vic could read Rob perfectly with his actions and does his best to help him. Rob 23 works at a supermarket and having a boss that has it out for him, is bad most times. His finances were stretched thin. Getting invite to the new Secrets club was a surprise but the surprise would when he sees his brother Alex on stage with Master Leo.. strange thing is he was straight or in the closet?? Vic was 33 and home again seeing the secrets flyer opening he'd missed. As a busy architect he's looking forward to his 3 weeks holidays. Vic needs to be his Dom self after being away for so long. Rob and Vic's first meeting wasn't a good one but after that they fast become friends. This author has just unknowingly introduced me to french toast that I've never had before after reading a scene.
I absolutely love An Unlocked Mind. K.c and Parker wrote yet another amazing story. They also managed to turn me from hating Rob to now loving him and his sassy personality. Vic coming into his life and showing him what trust respect and true love is. I'm so happy that Rob found Vic but more importantly he found himself. I could not put this down as it totally had me captivated from the first page to the last. Loved seeing the Collars and Cuffs men. This is a 5 star plus plus plus for me
Omg, this is the first book I’ve read from these authors but it’s left me wanting to read more.
Rob is a loner, a no-hoper, going nowhere in a dead end job. Getting an invitation in the mail to visit a new club in London, he decides he has nothing to lose by jumping a train from Manchester to go. When he arrives and discovers his brother is actually the sex act he flees the club, but not before being very rude to a guy on the way out.
Vic can’t get out of his head the obnoxious little brat that’s rude to him as he flees the club. So when he bumps into him during his car journey home, and the heavens open up, he offers him a bed for the night.
This is where the story really starts. Rob is adamant he is not gay, but what is it the Dom Vic has over him? Why is he having feelings for him? And what is it Vic is attracted to in this bad tempered brat that keeps turning up at his flat every weekend?
Although I found this book slow to start, once I got into it I was hooked and read it in one day. This friendship-to-love story was beautifully written. It wasn’t just about the sex like some books, it was about 2 very different lives coming together, but when you did get the sexy bits they were off the scale hot.
Will Vic get his sub and will Rob finally admit what he feels for a man?? You will have to read this amazing book to find out. Books after fifty
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
For those of us that have read the Collars & Cuffs series you may remember Rob as Alex's not so nice brother. For everyone else, don't worry if you haven't because An Unlocked Mind is a standalone and the authors provide all the background information you need.
When we first meet Rob he is working at a supermarket and has a run in with a customer. I got really mad on Rob's behalf reading this scene. I thought Rob was being treated unfairly. But spending a little time with Rob and his first trip to BSDM club Secrets reveals his ugly side. I started to realise he is not very likeable guy and his behaviour when he runs into Dom Vic in the club is down right embarrassing. Later Vic offers Rob and lift to the station and this one kind act leads to them becoming friends.
While Vic is crucial to this story and an amazing man, for me it was all about Rob and watching him turn his life around. He is miserable, angry, full of shame and just not a very nice person. With some introspection and guidance from Vic he slowly starts to make changes to his life. I loved that it isn't easy for Rob to make changes and he stumbles along the way. Ultimately it takes courage to change and I think is what had me loving Rob in the end. I like to think that people can change for the better and improve themselves so I loved watching Rob's transformation.
This is a wonderful love story too which takes time to develop. Vic is so wise, strong and supportive of Rob I can see how easy it would be fall in love with him.
An Unlocked Mind is a beautiful story and I absolutely loved it.
