Extremely disappointing. The focus on someone being pretty, handsome or ugly and the correlation with being desirable or not made me want to scream. The characters were superficial, almost clichéd, and the investigation into whether or not the protagonist was corrupt was amateurish, with Hillary being so smart and the investigators not having a clue.( Ian Rankin provides a good role model for how to write about this.) I kept waiting for something to happen, but the repetition surrounding the interplay between the police became distracting and interfered with the plot. The sudden solving of the case seemed to come out of the blue and implausible.
More than ever I see the importance of nuance for portraying conflict, its power in creating credibility and characters one can relate to.
