Great Operating System for Software Development
7 November 2018
I have been using Linux for well over a decade. I still think that Linux is a great system and I wouldn't run anything else on my servers. But I simply don't have the time anymore to deal with all those little imperfections that Linux still has on the desktop. I want reliable Bluetooth. I want to be able to put the computer to sleep or hibernation and wake up without crashing. I want sound to "just" work.
Windows 10 does all of that and more. And thanks to WSL I still have all my Linux tools available if I need them. (Which I rarely do because Windows 10 does basically everything I need.)
I installed Windows 10 on my Laptop (which I didn't buy with a pre-installed WIndows because I used Linux). Installation of Windows 10 was very easy, without any problems or surprises. And since I installed Windows 10, it just runs. I haven't had a problem so far. I even started to use OneDrive. Or the Windows Mail and Calendar apps.
I mainly use my computer for software development. Docker, git, dotnet, python, django, C++, Qt/QML, VS code. Everything just works. The only thing to keep in mind is that when building Linux based docker images, you should set git to checkout with unix style line breaks, because shell scripts in Docker fail when lines end with CRLF.
