'Charmer' by Avery Flynn was book two in the Harbor City series. The book was well-written, funny, refreshing, fast-paced and steamy. The dialogue and banter between the MCs was a highlight, as was the odd My Fair Lady references. Hudson Carlyle, of Carlyle Enterprises' contribution to his family's business, was to schmooze clients. Yes, he was a charmer! His charm spread liberally to women, too. Ant Scientist (yes, that's right) Felicia Hartigan, was a strong and gorgeous girl, but certainly not sophisticated or fashion conscious. She was in love with Tyler Jacobson, her neighbour. Sadly, it was unrequited. Hudson and Tyler had a connection, so Hudson offered to help/coach Felicia to get Tyler's attention, but he was actually smitten with her himself. The scenario was then set up for fun and games. (At the same time, Hudson hoped to repair an estrangement between his brother, Sawyer, from 'The Negotiator' and his one time friend, Tyler.) As the story unfolded, readers became aware that Hudson was hiding something. Would he trust Felicia to be his confidante? I loved how each MCs saw the real 'Hudson' and 'Felicia' underneath their veneers and their growing romance was delightful. The secondary characters added richly to the plot, too (including a scruffy, grumpy, one-eared ginger cat). Avery's new book, Charmer, was an engaging and nicely balanced read and I can recommend it to fans of RomCom. Looks like Tyler's next.
I was underwhelmed by this book. The first in the series was The Negotiator and what a witty wonderful, charming story it was with great chemistry. Not so for Hudson and Felicia, my feeling reading the book that it fell into the trap of a three book series and the middle book is the bridge between the great characters in book one and three. Avery spent an amazing amount of time focusing on Tyler and his potential romance that will occur in book three. I just got the feeling the author did not connect with this couple. So what did I like about this book. I loved the fact that Felicia was an academic and was nerdy, underconfident and focusing on a list of to do’s by thirty. If you love the My Fair Lady story line then this is the book for you. I loved that Hudson was fascinated with Felicia from the first page and I loved how he was juggling a life with two disparate career responsibilities. What I didn’t like, the sex was hot no doubt, but I never sensed intimacy between them. It felt like hot sex was used to fill great tracts of the book because Avery could not get good, witty, fast dialogue between the two of them. Romantic comedy relies on witty repartee between all characters and it just didn’t happen in this book. The author came up with a great plot and story line but never really delivered life and energy to the characters, so for me it lacked real romance.
The Charmer by Avery Flynn is the second book in her Harbor City series. A flirty, fun, sexy, romantic story told in dual POV between Hudson Carlyle and Felicia Hartigan. Can be read as a standalone but better read in series order. Each book continues with another couples story along a progressing timeline.
Hudson is the younger brother of Sawyer Carlyle from the first book, The Negotiator, and an all-around charmer (hence the title of this book). At a fundraising event he fixates on a nerdy, tiny ant researcher, Felicia, and ends up agreeing to help her begin dating his brothers best friend, Tyler. What he doesn't plan on is the crazy chemistry they have together.
Felicia has a plan - a list - things to accomplish before she is thirty (in a month) and the last thing unchecked on this list is dating Tyler. The problem is, he doesn't see her as anything other than a little sister. When Hudson charms his way into her life with a plan for her to nab Tyler and a small request for her to help him she is hard pressed to say no. Any attraction she feels to Hudson, while he is helping her with her Tyler issue is just transference, right?
sizzlingly sexy, laugh out loud funny, with just enough emotion and angst to keep it very interesting I thoroughly enjoyed this read! Up next, The Schemer!
I loved this sexy romantic comedy, book 2 in the Harbor City series, from Avery Flynn. Hudson Carlyle, sexy, rich womaniser with no intention of settling down anytime soon, is instantly drawn to nerdy ant researcher Felicia Hartigan when he sees her at a museum fundraiser. She's everything he's never wanted in a woman, droll and plain. It turns out though that there's so much more under Felicia’s nerdy exterior, something that Hudson sees straight away. Felicia knows exactly what kind of man Hudson is and she's not afraid of putting him in his place. This only makes her more attractive to Hudson. They're both hiding the truth from those they love. Hudson however is a willing accomplice in helping Felicia win the heart of the one she's loved since she was 15 years old. Felicia too, agrees to help Hudson as an accomplice in his greatest secret. When they agree to help each other they both get more than they bargained for, namely super hot page sizzling chemistry. Unfortunately neither one can see what is right in front of them. Both too stubborn to see the writing in the wall. A fun, enjoyable, easy read that can be read as a standalone, I must say though I’m going to be reading book 1 in the series (The Negotiator). I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
