Well executed story where all the action happens on a single day. Caro arrives in Glasgow, searching for answers. Cammy is planning the ultimate proposal. Lila is tired of being a dirty little secret. Bernadette reaches for liberation and Ken is in for a surprise. By the end, there are some disappointed people, but those who deserve happiness will get it!
Take 24 hours, a cauldron of interestng characters, with stories that are going to cause a train crash when they intersect and you have a fun and engaging holiday read. Caro is certainly the lynchpin to this story and she is relatable. You want her to win, just as you want to see Lila get a come-uppance. A satisfying story where everyone gets their just desserts.
Wow this was a fantastic read with a welcome reappearance of Sarah from a previous book. Uplifting as two women break free with wonderful results while a few selfish people get their comeuppance. A promise of love at the end ...perfect!!
I enjoy a wide range of subjects when reading and every now and again something different, this is one of those books. The characters are interesting yet knowable and the build up to midnight is very well done. Yes a book that is difficult to put down and very enjoyable.
I genuinely could not put this book down. I adore Shari Low’s novels and once again she did not disappoint.
The thing I love about Shari Low’s novels is how she creates characters with relatable circumstances but life has thrown them an unexpected curve ball and they find an inner strength that is just so heartwarming and inspiring.
‘One Day in December’ is about four completely different people who’s lives become entwined in the strangest of ways. I expected an easy, escapist chick-lit book but this was much more.
Set over the space of one day, this book introduces us to four people who don’t really know each other, but have so much connecting them. It was great how well the story flowed from one person to another, with a chapter being dedicated to each character in turn.
Caro who’s gut instinct fears that her childhood wasn’t as it seemed, is setting off by train to track down the father who abandoned her and her mother years before. A post on Facebook, has led Caro to suspect that her father’s frequent absences on business during the years he and her mother were together may have been cover for something else entirely. Was he in fact leading a double life?
Then there is menswear shop owner Cameron, known to his friends as Cammy, wears his heart on is sleeve and is planning to propose to his girlfriend. She’s the first woman he’s fallen for since he lost the love of his life to another man. Helped by pals, Josie and Val (hilarious characters), he’s chosen the perfect ring, the perfect suit, the perfect restaurant. Now he just needs everything to go to plan.
Lila is an Instagram addict who has one thing on the top of her agenda – herself. She’s interested in snaring her married lover, cardiac surgeon Ken, who she’s been having a passionate affair with for years, unbeknownst to his wife. Lila’s determined that today’s the day Ken will tell his wife he’s leaving her – and if not, Lila’s going to do it for him!!
And finally there is Bernadette, a woman who has been living in fear and resentment for far too long. Bernadette knows all about leaving because after thirty years of marriage – she’s had enough of her husbands callous, controlling behaviour and she’s planning her departure for life as a free woman however she needs to make her escape before Ken returns home.
The story may take place over one day in the city of Glasgow, but it will be a momentous day for our characters. Events unfold in two-hourly time slots with frequent switches between the different characters.
The further into the storyline I read, the clearer certain situations seemed to become. This wasn’t a story about relationships being broken but rather it was a story about how things are not always what they seem. It was a story about learning to find true happiness and not being afraid to take that first step.
Moving, intense, eye-opening and incredibly heart-warming; ‘One Day in December’ will leave you reaching for the tissues and a box of chocolates or a glass of wine... while also warming your heart and making you smile at the same time. 5 Stars Ms. Low again!!
The lives of these characters are intertwined throughout this tale. Some you will love others you hope karma hits them big time. Their ages vary & none of the are NA. The story drew me in from the start & it's been ages since I devoured a tale. Bernadette was the one I hoped for happiness the most & I enjoyed her journey in going after what she wanted after so long in a very controlling marriage. Caro was the one I felt for the most in a very touching way. She deserved love after her father issues & her selfless ways. These two had the most profound effect on me. (As for Jack I hoped his supposed health issues would bring him into the path of the dear doctor but this played out differently. Sorry that was a byline). As for Lila I understand the way she is & is very true of this generation today. I loved her social media selfies etc but her not so much. Cammy, I would have preferred him to be just Cam. The name was too girlish for a guy however other than that he was one of the good guys. So this is one mixed up story with varying POV's giving you the insight into their feelings etc. The whole synopsis drew me in & hooked me big time. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
Thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I thought the author pulled it together very well and yes, there was the odd typo and glitch, but quite frankly the story was so good that I forgot about anything I noticed straight away.
I don't think Lila was "overdone" as one reviewer did. There are girls who are so self-absorbed that you could put a rocket under them and they still wouldn't notice. Some people live their lives on FB!
I really enjoyed this story as it was one you just wanted to read from start to finish and let tbe world do its own thing until you had finished the last word. A great holiday read. Thanks Shari! Will buy your other books now as I'm sure they will be just as enjoyable.
Great story, couldn't put the book down and got to bed VERY late! I loved they way everyone got their just desserts, good and bad. Such a great author, I am really becoming a Shari Low fan. Thanks for the hours of enjoyment!
