The DCI Ryan series has been a true find. A valet at Craigside dies from a fall during a blackout during a party which DCI Ryan is attending with Anna. Perhaps it is an accident but then his locker and house is rifled. Then another death occurs.
The team swing into action. They track down leads and get results but there are other stories and wider conspiracies. Some are discovered but others are for future books. There are several loose ends even as some are solved.
In the background well sort of we give the relationships. Ryan and Anna are preparing to be married. Phillips is looking after Mackenzie who is PTSD. There is a wonderful scene involving Anna where things change for the better. Yates yearns after Ryan but Lowensen is finding her attractive. Both are outsiders. Then we have the reappearance of Jennifer Lucas his former boss and lover to be again his boss. Even Faulkner seems to have an interest forming with a maybe suspect.
Murder is always dark but at least LJ Ross balances this out with the relationships. The thorough investigation at least keeps the interest high. There is also the history and the wider networks of family and crime. I thought that the shadowy world so good In the first book became hard to sustain as the series progressed. We had the serial killer and now a strange murder. I'm looking forward to the next book.
