Elizabeth is fleeing a violent past which almost killed her, but instead she killed her husband in self defence. Now, after her old friends and her in laws turned on her, Elizabeth travels to a town where no one knows her. She has found a wonderful old house renovated into apartments. On the ground floor is the kindly landlady. Elizabeth's apartment is on the second floor and a rather gruff, but attractive man lives above. Elizabeth gets work and the attraction between her and her neighbour grows. But people from Elizabeth's past have not forgotten her and several threats are made. What's more, her in laws are suing her for wrongful death. There is only one old acquaintance who seems to want to remain friends. But, she may be leading Elizabeth into more danger. I enjoyed the developing relationship between the characters. Chris was grumpy, because he was stressed and lonely. And Elizabeth was as nervous as a kitten as a result of being battered and belittled for years. They both had to learn to trust again.
This was a beautiful romance between two broken souls. Both Elizabeth and Chris have been hurt in the past by their spouses (Elizabeth to a much greater degree than Chris - heartbreakingly so!), and when they first meet, they deny what they instinctively feel out of fear. As situations arise that bring them closer to each other, they start to realise that maybe there is hope for the relationship they thought was a fairytale. But things can't be that easy! As both of their pasts come back to haunt them, they have to fight to protect their burgeoning relationship.
This was a beautifully written storyline, with characters who were deep and believable. I loved how everything progressed and that there wasn't a quick fix for their insecurities either. It was real!
Recommend this read, and I'll definitely be reading the rest of this series on Chris' brothers.
