This is an adult romance between two injured people, Annalyse and Holt, who are inadvertently thrown together. She is a professional blogger who has not got over the death of her husband on their marriage day, and he over something terrible that occurred early in his medical career. We learn of her experiences through her blog diary, but really only discover his towards the end of the story. They become next door neighbours when she moves into her sister’s property to house-sit while her sister travels for a few months, and then finds him to be the fill-in doctor when she goes for a gynae checkup! They gradually get to know more about themselves and each other as their relationship develops. This is an intelligent and thoughtful book and sold me on the author’s writing skills. I am now slowly looking at her other writings.
I was sitting down enjoying a coffee scrolling through Instagram one morning and saw this book mentioned, I one clicked and finished it within the day. This is the first Prescott Lane booked I’ve read and I was completely engrossed. As Garth Brooks sings "Standing outside the fire, Life is not tried, it is merely survived, if you're standing outside the fire.” Holt and Annalyse have both individually suffered tremendous loss all centred around separate Halloween heartaches. Together they take us on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs as they come to terms with the heartache of the past and learn to stand together and face the flames and internal fire of loss, life and love and the possibility of a happy future together.
This was a beautiful story of surviving loss and trying to build a life without guilt, I loved Anna she was amazing, and made Holt understand that you can't hide behind your pain you must confront it. Must read loved it. 💙
2 very troubled souls have this instant connection. However due to their demons they vow not to heal the other. Of course it becomes more. Annalyse is finally getting herself together but it takes a lot for Holt to let go. The author takes you through their issues & it is a very heartfelt tale. At times it's very deep.

So I finished this book a few days ago but I’m still not sure where to begin with my review. No matter what I write I will not do this book justice but I will try. This is the second book of Prescott’s I’ve read and yet again she has done it – reduced me to tears (in a good way I promise) and made me take this book to heart. She has become a new one-click author for me and I will not hesitate to buy her other books.
Annalyse is a free-lance writer and has travelled all over the world. She has finally decided that it’s time to stop running and live with the burn that consumes her every day. She goes home to housesit for her sister, Meg, and ends up saving her sexy as hell next door neighbour, Holt, in more ways than one.
Holt is a doctor and resident bachelor on the lake. He has his own demons to face in the fire but he is not ready to do that. He is happy living in his own environment where he can control everything and everyone around him. That is until he meets Annalyse. Is she real? Is she a dream? Only time will tell.
Annalyse and Holt are both broken people, scarred by incidents that occurred on Halloween 5 years ago. They vow not to fix each other, to simply provide pleasure, but can this truly make them happy? And can two broken people really agree to not try to fix each other?
I don’t want to go into too much detail about Holt and Annalyse as I don’t want to ruin the rollercoaster of a journey that their relationship takes. Annalyse is one tough cookie. She owns her flames in the fire and despite a horrific past, has learned to love the warmth that the fire gives. How she carries on I have no idea as I don’t think I could in her shoes. Holt envies her and the way she has dealt with some of the demons in her past. My heart aches for Holt as we read chapters from his perspective and are given tid bits about what happened to him. Prescott’s writing is brilliant and I was swept up in their story from the first few pages that I read. Not many authors can do that for me. I was warned that tissues were required when I started reading this book and I am giving everyone the same warning but I beg you, please do not let it put you off reading this awesome book. I know I’ve rambled on and I hope you have stuck with me to the end of my review, but I do not have enough good words to explain how brilliant this book is. Please just see for yourselves.
